Yamaha Help

I'm trying to decide on whether to get a Special Series Xeno or a LA Custom. I'm going to be a jazz trumpet player going into college so I need to know the specs for these 2 horns playing wise. Any help would be great.

Re: Yamaha Help

Just a question... but are these the only horns you're considering, or are you looking at others as well? (different brands and/or models)

Re: Yamaha Help

I would try the horns and see how they play rather than getting a horn based on the 'numbers' the horn is built with. Sometimes the horn you think won't be good because it isn't what you think you are looking for turns out to be better than the competition.

Re: Yamaha Help

I've looked at all the other Yamaha's and liked these 2 the best, I can't afford the other more expensive ones. I haven't really looked at Bach, Stomvi or Schilke. Any suggestions on what I should try?

Re: Yamaha Help

if you have the chance, id say you should try it all. Of course, look in your price range, but its worth the extra trouble to find the horn which suits you best, especially if you'll be using it every day. Personally, im not a fan of Yamaha trumpets, but to each his own. They might be perfect for you. I planned on getting one a long time ago until i tried them all out (along with other brands), and i ended up getting something completely different because they didnt work for me.

Re: Yamaha Help

both horns are great and would serve you well... however... its no joke the LA indeed has that LA Sound to it - It's a real west coast, studio sound.... which is great if you're into that and want that sound. If you want something a touch smokier, I'd say go with the Xeno Special Series. If you're going to be doing ANY crossover, i.e. church gigs, etc, I'd say go with the LA. It is a very very versatile horn, sounds great, and isn't that bad on your wallet.

good luck!

This link will take you to a discussion about Getzen's Mike Vax horn from some who have not played it, some who have, and Mr. Vax and Mr. Getzen as well.

John Miconi is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Yamaha Help

If you are looking exclusively at Yamahas, you should also check out the 8310Z Bobby Shew trpt. It's a medium .445 step bore horn with a large .462 bore tuning slide. I think it would be a great horn for jazz as well as for legit applications.

Re: Yamaha Help

if Yamaha is your only option please try to find a dis-continued Mike Vax yamaha or a very good used M.V. Yamaha. These horns are very versatile and are great players. This is the only horn that my wife and I both like and hers fits any situation called for. Dave

Re: Yamaha Help

Has anyone played any of the Stomvi Elites? I saw that Mambo Titanium one and wondered what it sounded like. Any enlightenment?
