Yamahas: Difference between 8xxx and 6xxx models

About 15 years ago I bought a 6310z which I believe at the time was the "top of the line" Bobby Shew model. After a ten year break from the horn I recently started a comeback and see that the new top of the line models are 8xxx's and the 6xxx's seem to be out of production.

I sold the 6310 after about a year and switched to a 1977 Schilke X3 (which I love), but I am curious what the differences are between the 8xxx's and 6xxx's. They seem to be a lot more expensive (above and beyond expected price increases over the last decade and a half).

Re: Yamahas: Difference between 8xxx and 6xxx models

6xxx= standard sound
8xxx= Xeno sound

8xxx more efficient, more character, I believe a MUCH better horn. Your face has to be pretty together to REALLY find the difference in blow as in this respect they are both great. The 8xxx is the artist instrument

Interesting. Can you describe the difference between the standard sound and the Xeno sound?

Also, the 6xxx line is in fact no longer in production, right?

If you don't know what standard is, you need to play more horns. It is in my opinion not too bright, not too dark, even throughout the register and doesn't stick out.

The Xeno is zippier, more resonant. Has a unique character. Is a section instrument only in a very fine section.
