Yet another new addition

After only being back playing for a few months my horn collection has grown again. I saw a deal for a pro tec double case with a horn/mpc I couldn't pass up.

The horn is a 1953 Blessing Standard that came with a Mt Vernon 17c2 mouthpiece.

After a good bath the horn plays nicely but the valves have a different feel than I'm used to.

My 7yr old has already taken to the horn and wants to learn on it. Seems like a solid enough horn to start with. I'm sure a band director will hate it with no first or third valve rings :)

Is this a good horn for him to start on?

If it is reasonably in tune and your seven year old can hold it properly, I see no problem. After your child starts to develop, he/she will want something new and shiny anyway - that can have 1st/3rd and pinky rings or saddles. I started on a Holton Clarke model long cornet (built in the 20s or 30s) with no rings or hooks. I still perform with it from time to time today!

yep 17c2. Its an old Mount Vernon Bach mouthpiece. I'll have to snap a pic of it. Rather worn but no issues on the business end :)

Be careful, or you'll end up with a closet full of horns (like me ). I have sold 5 of 6 the past couple of years, though (but have bought 3 or 4 more!) It's a disease, just ask my wife.

Good news. I'm about to move to a bigger house :)

I'm trying to convince the wife I need to get a 20-30s peashooter style horn to hang on the wall as decoration in the new gameroom. (preferrably still playable too)

Scary part is I still wouldn't mind a piccolo and I'm a sucker for deals on vintage horns and Christmas and my birthday are around the corner.

So far 2 of the 3 are older than I am by quite a bit but that's the fun part to me.

Right now I'm dangerous on those budget vintage horns. I only spent $125 plus S&H for the double case and Blessing trumpet.

The Holton was a gift so I'm only in the hole $140 plus went today and picked up a new case from Brook Mays fire sale for $15 so daddy can use the double and have the "new" case for the Blessing.

Too bad I didn't know earlier. I sold a VERY nice looking one on eBay a couple months ago to Jerome Callet (yes, the real one), pretty cheap. Satin/polished silver finish, no dents, but the valves leaked pretty badly. Playable, but better as a wall hanger.
