York Models

Hello again to all: So, which horn do you think is an "all-around better player;" the York "Artist" or the York "Standard, feather-touch?" BTW, I have a mint Artist and would not sell it for all the tea in China......but, just saw a feather-touch that looks so beautiful...that, I must have it...that is, unless they are dogs....?????

Re: York Models

Yes, they are "Vintage" horns. The York is similar to the Bach, but better, in my opinion. They were "big" in the 40s and 50s. Some had innovations that we don't have even today - the "Feather-touch" is an example; this allowed to change the tension of the valve springs with a touch of a dial....imagine that?

Re: York Models

Some of the older Reynolds and Roth trumpets have the" dial the tension "on the valves so one can adjust spring strength

Re: York Models

Neither horn is even close to "21st Century Standard" in sound, so the one that you fancy on that particular day is the better all round horn!

Re: York Models

Goz: Go to Horn-U-Copia.com and there are pictures of most Yorks that are still around on e-bay, etc. I just saw a great photo of the York Feather-touch....a. gorgeous horn, and they do play great! As to being up to the "21st Century standard" What is that? I have a new, custom Harrelson and I happen to think that my particular York Artist plays every bit as well...if not better....

Re: York Models

Claude tried the site but I can't gain access for some reason-the address just didn't work.Is the artist model the top of the line or is the master/custom models-it all seems a bit confusing!!As far as sound is concerned I agree that many vintage horns outplay some of the modern trumpets -I love vintage horns-I have a 1953 olds studio and a 1940's selmer signet with all the S bracing and they are superb horns with a great response and fat sound.
