1907 Holton Collegiate Trumpet

Good Evening. I learned today that the trumpet I received for 8th grade (back in 1982) and still have occasionally played, is a Holton Collegiate Trumpet, ser # 3353. It corresponds to a 1907 year of production. I'm wondering if anyone knows more about these horns. Their quality etc, value, or interesting tidbits. I'm just facinated to learn its so old, and according to the music store gent, a good quality instrument. Hope to hear from you.

Re: 1907 Holton Collegiate Trumpet

Ok, I read in another posting somewhere that Collegiate Models weren't produced until the 1930's, the guy who posted though had a Collegiate Model with a serial in 5000 range, which suggested 1908. So, can anyone explain what's real? Are mine and his early production Holtons? or not?

Can you post a picture? And does it have a model number on it anywhere?

Re: 1907 Holton Collegiate Trumpet

I don't believe Collegiate's were made until the 30's when the burgeoning student market resulted in many more makers doing "student" instruments.
Try the Holton Loyalist site and see if you can get any more info.
Holton Loyalist.com - Dedicated to the Frank Holton & Co.; Makers of High Grade Band Instruments As far as I know, the vintage trumpets I have seen were mainly called Frank Holton from 1898 -1917 in Chicago, then the move to Elkhorn, Wi. In the History page on HL "This growth in student instrument demand was not a good fit for the higher priced professional instruments the Holton was producing. The company introduced lower priced outsourced instruments under such names as Pertin and Beaufort until it could introduce its own "Collegiate line in the early 30's.

You can go to the Holton section under "manufacturers" at Horn-u-copia also for lots of info. It seems there may be a number or two missing from the serial?

My theory is that this is a late-model T602 and LeBlanc restarted the numbering at some point.

Good thought! And Leblanc serials are not available, I believe. Photo and inscriptions would tell all.

Re: 1907 Holton Collegiate Trumpet

Does anyone know how to tell if its a Leblanc model? The trumpet is still at the shop, but I'll have it back tonight and can take a closer look. I know however, that I did not miss any numbers on the serial. The horn was in rough shape when i got it in '82, so my guess is its pretty old, though perhaps not 102 years. The music store gent initially thought it was from the late 40's to early 50's, until he ran the serial and came up with 1907. There is a brass medallion on it (between the main slide) that says Holton Collegiate on it.

That medallion wasn't put on until recent times. Take a look at the leader pipe near where the mp goes in . There may be a model number there?
Brass Review.com - Holton

Here is the Brass Review page on Holton's. Looks like the medallion may have started with the ST series? The cornets also put them on the Colliegiate models.

Re: 1907 Holton Collegiate Trumpet

I just took a look at the Brass Review pages and it seems its likely some sort of ST. I'll look for a model number tonight when I get it back from the shop. None of the pictured medallions though match mine. Mine is a scalloped diamond shape. So how old do you think this is if its an ST? and this still doesn't clear up the serial number question. why only a 4 digit serial number if its not an early horn?

Re: 1907 Holton Collegiate Trumpet

Ok, the model number is T602. Does that clear up anything? Holton is engraved on the bell and nothing else.
