1924 Buescher TrueTone Shank

I just received my Truetone which I purchased on Ebay. I noticed that it came with a connector that attaches to the mouthpiece and shank. Is this connector required? I tired to use a Bach 3C mouthpiece with this connector and it just sounded way off. I haven't gotten around to cleaning the mouthpiece that came with the trumpet, but again I'm not sure if I need to use this connector. I'm sure some of you out there are more familiar with these older horns and could help me figure out the correct way to attach the mouthpiece.

Thanks

Can you post a photo of the horn and its mouthpiece adaptor? Many cornets in the era when your Buescher was manufactured used a very small shank mouthpiece. I own several of these horns. In addition, Conn used a "short shank" cornet mouthpiece until about 1945. Olds cornets were made with a huge receiver, requiring an over size,( compared to the current standard Bach shank ), mouthpiece. In addition to this, many of the early cornets used a 'tuning bit' which was fitted into a very short leaderpipe and the mouthpiece fitted into the 'bit'. This was to accomidate both High Pitch and later, Low pitch standards, which were not truly standard on both sides of the Atlantic at that time and, charts in C,A, and Bb.

What you show is a cornet mouthpiece to trumpet receiver adaptor that allows a cornet mouthpiece to be used in a trumpet. It is NOT meant to be used with a trumpet mouthpiece, as you show being tried.

Ah okay. According to the description, this horn was part of an estate sale. The previous owner probably just stored it with this trumpet. It being silver like the trumpet, I thought it was part of the horn. Thanks for clearing that up. I guess I need to buy a cornet next!

Thanks Again!

It was common practice in that era to include the subject adaptor into the sale of the trumpet. I have several such adaptors that were original equipment with trumpets that I have acquired.

Not a bad idea, but, to use that adaptor all that you need is a cornet mouthpiece. That way you can play your trumpet with a cornet mouthpiece coupled with your adaptor. Aren't vintage horns a hoot?
