1950s Selmer

Hi.
Thanks to the folk who posted replies to my query re identifying my Kanstul.
Heres another query but its about my 1950s/60s Selmer. Its in good condition overall, a couple of very small dinks and losing a lot of laquer. However I read in the thread "Cleaning an old cornet" about "red rot". Whats this about then? (I guess its corrosion, but how is it recognised.... red spots i guess). The Selmer has a couple of spots on the tuning slide, which I had just put down to patina due to ageing brass. My Selmer blows quite mellow compaired to the new(ish) Kanstul and it was given to me by my father for Christmas in 1976. The pictures (that will follow shortly....techy probs) show the horns current state and the "red spots" and whilst maybe not worthy of the "Eye Candy" section it does hold a lot of sentimental value for me!

Re: 1950s Selmer

Nice vintage horn you've got there! I don't think the reddish discoloration on your tuning slide is rot; my old conn 22b has the same kind of coloration where the brass has been exposed to the air for a long time. Also sometimes that old brass will turn a reddish-pink color after being chem cleaned where some of the minerals on the surface of the brass have leached out. It's no big deal IMO.

Re: 1950s Selmer

The horn is engraved "Selmer Super Sterling. London" with the trademark "Selmer" stamped on the bell.

Re: 1950s Selmer

Interesting!

Now, in all details it is a Hüttl, their top model at that time. So, conclusion is that Selmer London imported these from Hüttl and sold them under their own label.

Have not played anyone myself, but those I have heard about were said to be really nice, actually far better than nice with regard to what they use to sell for. One guy - who had a slightly younger one I believe - thought that it was the best he had ever played or maybe second best after a Conn Vintage One he liked very much.

Re: 1950s Selmer

There is a Huttl trumpet on Horn-u-copia, Reply #1, circ 1968, that looks almostl exactly like this Selmer, same bracing, water keys and finger pull 3rd slide ring, looks like it may have a Krantz ring or something similar. There is also a Chris -Kratt trumpet on ebay with looks similar in some ways, engraved: Chris-Kratt, Instrument Co, inc., AK Huttl in script, Union , NJ, Baiersdorf.
I vote for the Huttl connection also. Ebay ad is 230267914436

Re: 1950s Selmer

I have an undated ad from Chris Kratt / Hüttl. The one on ebay is the slightly less expensive model.

Those who look like the Selmer Super Sterling and HuC reply 1 sold for 169 USD when new while those who look like the ebay ad sold for 135 USD new. At the bottom there was also an "American Diplomat" model which sold for 95 USD new.

Sometimes Hüttl instruments show up here in Sweden too and they seem to be the same models that were sold in USA by Chris Kratt, but these European ones are of course only engraved A. R. Hüttl.

Re: 1950s Selmer

Cheers guys, the feedback has been interesting. I have tried in the past to trace some history on this horn as I have never come across another apart from an ad on ebay. Anyways heres some more piccis showing some detail including the bell engraving, tone ring and the 3rd valve trigger mechanism. Sorry for the poor quality. the photos were taken on my phone as my daughter has taken my digicam to her prom!!!!

Re: 1950s Selmer

Well aint it strange how things develop???? Following on from the info offered I started foraging through the Huttl undergrowth. Starting with HuC where there was indeed a picci of an identical trumpet called the Super Deluxe (albeit in better condition than mine.... in fact it looks brand new..... take a look ..... Horn-u-copia - Huttl Trumpets ). Googling Huttl Super Deluxe unearthed another revelation to me!!!!! Horst Fischer!!!!!!!!! I never heard of the guy but he may be worth a bit of a look at if yr into MF or Chase!!! Heres the reply that was posted on some other forum (TPIN) that led me there and it also threw some light on my owd Selmer/Huttl Sterling Super/Super DeLuxe!! ( and I have to agree with the author. its a nice blow and quite mellow and quite a heavyweight).

QUOTE:

Mike -
Not sure. I can tell you this: I paid about $250 for mine a few years ago,
in a heated auction on eBay. It ended up costing me more because it came
from Canada (I'm from USA), and since it was originally a German horn, I had
to pay an import tariff. I sunk another $100 into it, getting dents out,
etc., and I still consider a reasonably good deal. It was considered a pro
horn when it was made back in the fifties/sixties, if I remember correctly.
However, watch that you don't buy the Chris-Krait Huttl Super-Deluxe (it's
stamped that way on the bell). It was licensed by Huttl to be made in New
Jersey, and is supposedly inferior to its German counterpart. (Although, I
owned one of those, too, when I was in high school, and it worked just fine
for me at that level).

It's a pretty nice horn. I love the third valve trigger, and wonder why
they don't make them ALL that way. The tone is nice - I think more mellow
than brassy. I've read comments form a number of players who use it as a
jazz combo horn, and compare it to a cornet. It's a heavy horn, partly
because of a very attractive two-piece bell (brass, with a nickel-silver
ring around the outermost flair). It slots okay, and plays fairly well in
tune, although I have a little trouble getting it to speak in the highest
registers. That could be me - from my research, I learned that there was an
internationally famous German artist from the fifties/sixties named Horst
Fischer who was a high-note artist, and considerd a "Maynard" in his own
right.

Hope this is some help. And since I've moved on to a Selmer Concept TT that
I consider the greatest horn in the world, I'd be happy to consider all
reasonable offers for the Huttl!
