Re: About my horns

thanks Bob....

I thought it was a cornet, but I wasn't positive.

I have a nice fluglehorn, not with me, but I am having shipped from Charlotte to Phoenix where I just recently moved.

I'll post a pick when it gets here....got it cause of Mangions's "Feels So Good"....remember it being a tough horn to blow, but Im gonna start getting back into it!!!

Re: About my horns

Bob also sold me my first horn, an LA Benge 5X. Man, those are great horns. Long gone, though, sadly.

Re: About my horns

i play the trumpet primarily because i love the sound. im not sure exactly which horn is the best out there, but its hard to imagine another type of trumpet with a cleaner and more pure sound!!!

you mentioned 5X. How can you determine exactly what model horn you own???

Re: About my horns

i just dug out an older trumpet that isnt in great shape but plays pretty good....just worked it over some.

The bell reads....

"The Gladiator" made by the HN White Co. Cleveland Ohio

2nd vavle has C 284 imprinted on it

Anyone have any idea about this ancient looking horn???

I'll try to get a pic up soon.

"Gladiator Band Instruments were produced from 1940-1941 and 1950-1953. The Gladiator line up included four instruments: cornet, trumpet, clarinet, and trombone. Gladiator instruments were intended for those who could not afford a Cleveland or American Standard instrument. Quality was very important to The H. N. White Company and Gladiator instruments were built with very high quality for their price range. In 1953 the Gladiator brand was dropped to better spend limited resources on the American Standard brand."

Here is one at Horn-u-copia
http://www.horn-u-copia.net/cgi-bin/...num=1218369495

As for dating yours, the serial number does not match what is printed for White instruments because I see no listing for a serial that starts with a "C"
H. N. White Serial Numbers for King Band Instruments
and
copy of king

But the style of yours makes me guess that yours might be from the second period they were made (see what I quoted in the earlier post).

I compared your photos to the catalogue entry at the White Web site.
Go to
Cleveland, American Standard, Gladiator, and Tempo Band Instruments.
find the small image that says
"1941 Catalog Picture"
click on that image to go to that illustration
then click on that image again to "+" it to enlarge it.
Your trumpet seems to have a different engraving than the 1941 one.
That and a few other things make me think yours might be from the early 1950's version of them, but I am only guessing.

Re: About my horns

i looked at the photos closely at this link:

Cleveland, American Standard, Gladiator, and Tempo Band Instruments.

and the 1941 catalog picks is almost identical mainly because of the 2 thin braces between the valves and bell, which is like mine, while the later models shown in the advertisements show only one brace.

so after that Im not sure what Ive got.... haha. It does sound good, and as Ive played it some over the last hour it is getting better.

As far as the serial number, I dont have a clue as just read what was on the outside of the valves. The valves are numbered 1, 2, 3 and the c 284 is above the 2 on the middle valve.

im still looking around for more info, and thanks for your help.
