About my horns

Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum and I posted under the intro a few moments ago.

I asked about one of my two e-benge horns and I thought this might be the better place to post my question.

I know the first horn I have is a trumpet, no doubt, e-benge serial number 31922 which falls in line with when it was purchased in 1979 when I was 10.

My 2nd horn is the one I have the questions about. I believe it to be a cornet, but not sure. It is about half the size of the trumpet with lots of curves to it and 3 spit vavles with a serial number of 29521 and the bell has the number 8 under the Resno-Tempered Bell. I would appreciate any info about the horn as I got in 1981 when my father took it as a payment in a poker game...if I remember the story right :)

Look forward to reading comments and discussions.

My favorite tunes to blow are all Herb Alpert music and lots of Dixieland and Ragtime.

There are cornets that are as long as trumpets,
and there are trumpets that are as short as cornets,
so length of the instrument is not definitive in identifying it as a cornet or a trumpet.
Whether the instrument's mouthpiece receiver is made for cornet mouthpiece or for trumpet mouthpiece is the only definitive way to identify the instrument.

A modern trumpet mouthpiece is 3-1/2" long.

A modern cornet mouthpiece is 2-3/4" long.

The small end of a trumpet mouthpiece is bigger around than the small end of a cornet mouthpiece.

The main photo in the eBay ad at
Holton Collegiate Trumpet - eBay (item 160360321780 end time Sep-10-09 19:27:26 PDT)
shows how strange it looks when someone sticks a trumpet mouthpiece into a cornet.
It just barely inserts a fraction of an inch and it sticks out way too far.

A cornet mouthpiece inserted into a cornet will stick out approximately 1-7/8".
The main photo in this eBay ad shows how it should look when a cornet mouthpiece is inserted into a cornet
Conn student trumpet/cornet with case and extras - eBay (item 140346333828 end time Sep-22-09 14:35:15 PDT)

So determine whether your mouthpiece is a trumpet mouthpiece or a cornet mouthpiece by measuring its length.
Then insert the mouthpiece into the instrument and see how far it sticks out of the instrument.

I cannot find a photo of someone sticking a cornet mouthpiece into a trumpet, but basically the cornet mouthpiece's little end is way too small, the cornet mouthpiece almost falls into the trumpet's mouthpiece receiver, and probably remains loose no matter how much you try to insert it farther.

Re: About my horns

Thanks for the mouthpiece note...

The mouthpiece on the horn is question is slightly smalller in diameter and much shorter. I tried to stick the trumpet mouthpiece in it and it didnt fit, and I stick the mouthpiece of the horn in question in the trumpet and it went ALL the way in.

So, from the info you gave I am assuming its a cornet.

I am going to get some photos posted for everyone to check out....

Thanks,

T

Re: About my horns

The cornet in this eBay ad seems to have the same engraving as you described, although its serial number is much later than yours
UMI Benge Resno Tempered Bell 8 Cornet OHSC - eBay (item 180405492091 end time Sep-15-09 04:38:02 PDT)

Edit
I just noticed that eBay ad says of that cornet
" Bore measures 5" "

I can't get your link to work.

Does the cornet look like the one I linked to in my last post?

Re: About my horns

You have one Benge trumpet and one Benge cornet. I used to be a salesman for a Benge dealer.
