Adding a 1st valve slide ring onto an olds?

I've got my eye on a Olds Super but it doesn't have a 1st valve slide ring. Is it that big a deal with the these horns? Can I add one onto there myself?

Personally, I'd keep a vintage horn as close to original as possible.

They came with that feature in the 40s, you would be very pleased with one of those....

OK, if you could find an original Olds part that fit your horn then I guess it would be acceptable. :)

I argue, sometimes unsuccessfully, that when a horn doesn't have a first-valve saddle or ring that it doesn't actually need one.

Some horns are built to a different intonation philosophy. Either you learn to play to its characteristics, or you don't.

But don't be immediately wanting to throw a saddle on a horn that doesn't have one. Get to know it, first.

Re: Adding a 1st valve slide ring onto an olds?

If you are buying this horn in order to play it and you feel once you get it you need a saddle, do it. If you are buying it just to add to a collection then that may be different. You are the one playing it and if you believe you need it do it.

Re: Adding a 1st valve slide ring onto an olds?

I have a Super and a Recording, both from the 50's. I decided to put a 1st valve slide kicker on the Super, but not the Recording. I have a problem with the high A on my Super but not so much on the Recording. As ANA said, the 1st valve slide kicker was an option on the Supers so I dont think its a problem to add. I had a late 60's Super with the adjustable kicker on it. I ordered the parts for the 1st valve slide and a 3rd valve slide stop through Buckeye Brass in my area. He has had a problem getting the parts quickly, but assures me they'll be here soon. When it happens, I'll post again and let you know cost and how it went.

1958 Olds SUPER Trumpet Gold Silver Los Angeles - eBay (item 350259999346 end time Oct-11-09 11:33:01 PDT)

I won this one : )

What do you guys think about the fullerton/LA bell hybrids? Has anyone ever played one?

Theres some unsightly spots on the lacquer but the rest of it looks great. I hope this was a good purchase!!
