Advice on Vintage Getzen Purchase

Hi Folks,

I'm a retired ex-choir teacher (who has been in school adm. for 17 years) and would like to play in our local community band. I'm not really a player, but because of my music background, I think I'll do OK in this setting. I bought a new Getzen Custom cornet. It was a great horn. It played great, but, I have always liked old things and decided to sell it and look for a vintage Getzen, either cornet or trumpet.

My question is, if I wanted to spend between $500 and $1,000, and get a near mint Getzen trumpet/cornet, what would the best value be.

Thanks for any help.

John

Re: Advice on Vintage Getzen Purchase

Hi John, welcome to the forum and as a fellow Michigander. I too enjoy vintage horns, and while not an expert, can give you some ideas. Go to Ebay-musical instruments-cornet/trumpet and specify Getzen and take a look at what is up for bids. Of the one's there currently you might check out:

Getzen Capri 580S Cornet
Getzen Super Deluxe Trumpet
Getzen 90 Deluxe

Others:
Getzen 80 cornet and Super Deluxe
Getzen 90 cornet and Super Deluxe

Trumpets:
Getzen Renaissance
Getzen Super Deluxe Tone Balanced
Gerzen 90

I'm sure others more knowlegeable than I will add more specifics.

Those art deco looking "clad" deluxe model cornets and trumpets are COOL! I don't know if I've ever seen a real mint one on ebay but there are plenty of good players and you can pick them up pretty reasonable. If needed or desired, a valve job and a re-lacquer by some of the fine tech guys we all have access to and you are golden! Good luck!

This one looks pretty nice, I think that bell could be rolled out and not show much. Check out the 3 tone!

Getzen Severinsen's are hard to beat. They show up on eBay all the time and usually sell reasonably.

Re: Advice on Vintage Getzen Purchase

Thanks guys for all the advice. I've done a little research and I think I'll be looking for a Getzen 90. I know I just missed one on e-bay, but I'm not in a hurry as I like the research and hunt as well as the playing. I've got a borrowed Martin Imperial to use for the time being, so I can be patient.

Thanks again.
