Ambassador / Special tone

Which has a more mellow "cornet-ish" tone, a 1960's Olds Ambassador cornet or a 1960's Olds Special cornet?

Which would sound closer to the nickel-plated 1966 Olds Studio cornet?

- Morris

I guess it would depend on who is blowing and what they have stuck in the receiver.

Morris, try a Wick 4 in anything. You'll get that sound.

"Today's concert will feature Morris playing a rooster with a Wick 4 mouthpiece stuck up its orifice."

<crowd gasps in awe at the incredibly rich tone that emanates, certain that it must be from an Olds Opera cornet instead>

- Morris, seeking an endorsement deal with Wick

P.S. - I'm thinking about having my rooster re-lacquered. Do you think it would affect the tone?

I personally think the Olds Special cornet is just a prettied-up Ambassador. The leadpipe is a little different, of course, but I've never been able to tell much difference in the sound betwen the two. Now, a rooster has a really different sound, but it's not mellow.....

On the differences between the Ambassador and the Special I agree with Dale. I have one of each of the cornets from the L.A. plant and the same from Fullerton. They all play decently, but, none of the above comes close to many of my other cornets. I think that the current sag in prices on them is probably reflective of their musicality.

About that rooster, I can't seem to get one to hold still for long enough to insert a mouthpiece into his 'receiver'.

Would a late-1960's nickel-plated Olds Studio cornet have a significantly richer tone?
(I have read that the late 1960's ones had a darker dound than the Studio cornets that came before.)

Resonant Sound

Forum: trumpetherald.com

If you'll read the Bill Adams forum in Trumpet Herald, you will see that Bill Adams suggested forgetting the mouthpiece and instead suggested placing the lips directly on the mouthpiece receiver.

That looks to me to be a Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinski action. I will just pass.
