Bach mp on Conn cornet?

As most people already know, Christine of Conn Loyalist has published proof that Conn cornets made pre-1958 have specially-shaped mouthpiece receiver tapers that work best with short-shank mouthpieces.

I completely trust Christine's research, but I don't know how critical the difference is in practical terms.
So I would like to take a poll to see just how critical that difference in mouthpiece taper really is.

Does anyone here successfully use a modern Bach mouthpiece on a pre-1958 Conn cornet?
From your personal experience, should I have any problems using my Bach 7 and Bach 7E mouthpieces on a pre-1958 Conn cornet?
Would my Bach 7 and 7E mouthpieces extend completely past the mouthpiece receiver into the leadpipe?

Re: Bach mp on Conn cornet?

I use short shank Bach 5B mouthpieces on my vintage Conn cornets, 40A and 80As mostly. I have tried modern mouthpieces but the taper is a little different.

There are short-shank versions of Bach mouthpieces?
Are they made by Bach or another company?
Are they off-the-shelf or custom-made?

Re: Bach mp on Conn cornet?

Yamaha makes short shank mp's. $28.95 at Music123. "compare to Denis Wick S." There are a number of sizes listed on the expanded info lline. I was considering one when I had my long cornet, but didn't go thru with it. I don't see any evidence Bach makes short shank mp's. Once in a while old Conn's show up on ebay.

I tried the Yamaha shortshanks earlier this year, but none of them were close enough to a Bach 7 and Bach 7E.

And I can't afford to have a custom mouthpiece made.

I remember reading months ago one Conn 12A owner saying that he uses a Bach mouthpiece, but I want to know the experience of anyone else who has tried using a Bach mouthpiece on a pre-1958 Conn cornet.

I want a .468 bore Conn cornet, but Conn stopped making them in 1955, which means that a .468 bore Conn cornet always has that unusual mouthpiece shank taper.

Re: Bach mp on Conn cornet?

I have tried modern mouthpieces with my Cavalier (made by Conn) cornet. Well, they work, but I have to work more with intonation and I also think that they restricts the tone somehow, that I cannot make such a big tone as I can with contemporary mouthpieces.

In my Cavalier cornet other old cornet mouthpieces also fit well, like for example those called E-Z TONE U.S.A. I think most other old cornet mouthpieces seem to share design with Conn rather than Bach.

Re: Bach mp on Conn cornet?

Because I used to work at the York plant I have a love for and a small 'accumilation' of York instruments. In that 'accumilation' I have several York mouthpieces. I use a York #41 1/2 short shank piece in my Conn 36A Concert Grand cornet with good success. The tone and intonation is nearly perfect. I know that in my mouthpiece drawer I can find m ore short shank pieces that should work equally as well.

Re: Bach mp on Conn cornet?

Thanks to everyone who contributed in this thread.

I cannot afford to buy a .468 bore pre-1958 Conn cornet and then discover that my mouthpieces won't work well with it.
So I guess I will just have to play it safe and never get one.

I will keep my eye out for a 1960's Olds Studio cornet or Reynolds Argenta cornet (both of which are .468 bore?), but it will take a miracle for me to be able to ever afford one.

The E-Z Tone mouthpieces were made by Conn, so they should work well....

Re: Bach mp on Conn cornet?

Aha, I see! Good to know.

By the way, it is the most trumpet-sounding cornet mouthpiece I have tried.
