I was thinking of investing in a strad and was wondering if this looks like a good deal. I am going to look at it on saturday. Any advice on the year would be nice. Also I know bach is known for its inconsistancy but right now I have a Getzen externa II. It has 3 small dents on the side of the bell but I am sure they can be smoothed out.

While pic isn't the best, it looks good. Wear and dinks are hard to see with silver (smears in pic).

You might want to find out what the history on the horn is...has it been replated, repairs etc. Also, why is it in a non period case?

I know some folks have said they have never played a bad Strad; however, I have -older and newer ones. See if you can get a 7 day return policy.

I know for a fact that isn't the case it originally came in, and I know for a fact it was either A: ordered custom plated, or B: replated. I have a 73 strad, it's a 43 bell, but same thing goes. Mine is in much worse shape than what I can see from that picture and it still plays fine, a few dings on the bell is nothing.

Get the serial# to confirm the year. Anything between 50,000 and 99,999 is 73 or below, 100,000 and over it is 74+. If it's early 70's, I'd call it a good deal.

The mute is basically free, the horn alone is worth 800 imo.

I know I wouldn't let mine go for 800, but it has more than monetary value to me as I'm the third person in my family to use it.
