British Markis Deluxe trumpet?

Anyone familiar with horn on ebay, vintage Markis Deluxe trumpet made by The British Band Instrument Co LTD, Made in England. #330253595075.? Has some Besson/ B&H design clues to me. Forward facing 2nd slide and similar "made in England" stamping. They are selling it in a Bundy case. Never heard of this one before, but there has been posting on the Horn-u-copia Besson trumpet thread about models, relationship to B & H, etc.

Re: British Markis Deluxe trumpet?

Never heard of it or that company.
However if it is stamped made in England or made in Britain and its not by Boosey and Hawkes then it is most likely to have been made by Barratts of Manchester.

It depends how old it is.

Re: British Markis Deluxe trumpet?

Thanks for the reply. The horn didn't have a bidder, including me, even though it was very cheap. Maybe he will re-list. Looks like 50'5-60's to me with very worn finish with currently dark patina.

Had not know of the Manchester maker, Barrett's . I see an avenue for more research! Cheers!

Re: British Markis Deluxe trumpet?

Thats the period when Barretts were making a lot of instruments.
Denis Wedgwood did his apprenticeship there so he might know the story.

Re: British Markis Deluxe trumpet?

I found the site www.manchestebeat.com/shops/barratts.php which is very interesting and mentions the brass shop but no detail on what was sold. There is a picture of a young Maynard Ferguson playing there in a buckskin jacket with fringe and another pictured trumpeter.

There is also a Gumtree post in Manchester by someone posting a cornet for sale "This cornet is jore an antique than an instrument. It was bought from Barratts of Manchester which was on Oxford Road, Barratts opened for business in 1950 and closed in 1980..... it is engraved Barratts of Manchester with serial number......I've no idea who made it,etc.

Haven't found any British Musical Instrument company yet, nor the Markis name. Interesting investigation.
