Could you post some PIcs? Here are the Horn-u-copia cornet pages. Maybe there are some that look like yours, or maybe the data might help. Serial dates it to 45-46 area per HUC list. http://www.horn-u-copia.net/cgi-bin/...num=1122470370

Check out Contempora corner also. Welcome to Contempora Corner!

It has a very ornately engraved bell which has Reynolds down the center with an F and A engraved on either side of the R. next to the third valve is a lower case script "f". The brass is multi toned with lead pipe, non-engraved portions of the outside of the bell as silver. The inside of the bell is laquered as well as the curved portions of the slides, the braces, the lower half of valve cluster and the engraved portion of the bell. Any information would be greatly appreciated
Your note about the "very ornately engraved bell" and "the outside of the bell [is] silver" leads me to suspect that this cornet has a sterling silver bell -- the brass bell cornets of this serial number time could be silverplated, but did not have ornate engravings. Check out the variations of "Model D" on this page and see if any of them match.

Re: Calling all vintage Reynolds owners... request for info

The model D4 is exactly the same as mine. Mine also used to look like that but it is the horn I played as a beginner and so has the bends and dings of beginner carelessness. If the bell truly is sterling silver that would explain the severe tarnish I now have. I don't play the horn, having discovered "heavy" metal in 1976 (baritones and euphoniums) which I majored on in college. (I'm an active band teacher in Wichita, KS).

Anyway - thanks for the info.

I have a Cleveland-era Reynolds cornet with sterling silver ball (model C2 on your site, SN 106xx). Due to poor storage it has severe corrosion in places, but it plays very nicely. Can anyone suggest a shop that does outstanding refurbishing/refinishing work on these horns?

Thanks!

Re: Calling all vintage Reynolds owners... request for info

I don't have any additional information on these models but I do have a (somewhat) related question. Back around 1963, a college mate of mine bought a matched set Reynolds Trumpet and Cornet that came in a single case (as I recall). I remember that the price for the matched set was (in my mind) astronomical - perhaps somewhere in the vicinity of $1000 (which would be over $10,000 in today's economy). I don't remember what specific model was involved as I probably didn't know enough about them to even ask that question. Does anyone know if it is possible that there was any model of Reynolds that would have cost anywhere near that amount?

There are several shops that do outstanding work. Two that come to mind are:

Charlie Melk
Charlie's Brass Works - Specializing in Professional Brass Instrument Customization, Repair and Refinishing

Dan Oberloh
Oberloh Woodwind and Brass Works

You'll have to contact them before sending your horn. Both have fairly long waiting lists.

[4] Engraving style?

[6] Serial number (or at least as much as you're comfortable sharing)?

[1] Bell size = 4 and a half inches

[4] Engraving style = see photo of bell below, it says:

TONEKING
NEW YORK BAND
NEW YORK
INSTRUMENT CO.

a number, 2617 is hand engraved under the engraving.

[5] Other cool features = I like the way the second valve slide comes straight out, a sign of a vintage horn. Also, it has no pinky rings or hooks.
[6] Serial number = P45344 (I think, but is is very worn.)

What can you tell me about my horn? It plays great, especially when played loud. Was it made by F A Reynolds, or just ended up in the case somehow?

Re: Calling all vintage Reynolds owners... request for info

Nice looking vintage trumpet. No, it was not made by F.A. Reynolds, but a model by the Julius Keilwerth shop in Graslitz, now Czech Republic, I think, in 1920 and originally made Saxophones but branched out into other winds. The factory was expropriated in 1945 and the Keiwerth's went elsewhere (per Horn-u-copia). It is certainly from the period around 1930 and may have a country of origin stamped on it somewhere, as required by law on instrument imports. New York Band instrument company was a US importer and operated from around 1915-50.

Lots of horns end up in un-matched cases. That is usually my situation

Here is another page about the Kielwerth company http://www.dallasmusic.org/jkbrass/history.htm

Re: Calling all vintage Reynolds owners... request for info

You know, that sure looks like a Conn stencil trumpet from the 1920's to me. The fittings, valve section, valve caps & buttons, braces, water keys, slide stop rods, etc. look exactly like some Pan American (Conn) horns of the era. Even the serial # matches the Pan American sequence in the late 20's. I couldn't find a good trumpet pic, but look at this cornet pic from the Connloyalist site and compare the features:

Re: Calling all vintage Reynolds owners... request for info

Wow. Talk about too much information, this is great! Thanks! I have much research to do now. I will start by finding out what expropriated means. Then I will start hitting all those links.

This old horn is not for sale, however, anybody want the F A Reynolds case? I could take it to my friend, Mr Antique Restoration of Georgetown, and put it on eBay for big money, I guess.
