Can anyone ID my Horn?

After lurking about for several months I have finally registered and hope to enter into some great discussions.

But first, I need some help identifying a horn I've just acquired. It is stamped 'Calvert Artist' on the bell and 'belgium' on the MP receiver. The only other markings is a s/n of 475 on the 1st valve casing.

It has an art deco style with raw brass and nickel plate and has hex caps and keys. The valves are bottom sprung.

Any ideas/info would be most appreciated.

Try Horn-u-copia, this site specializes in identifying unusual horns and makers.

Horn-u-copia public forum discussing antique, obscure and out-of-production Brass Instruments

Also, if you can, post some pics. Your horn may be a stencil of some other well known brand. There are many folks here that can identify a horn with just a photo or two. Good luck !

Re: Can anyone ID my Horn?

I looked on Horn-u-copia and couldn't find any reference to a Calvert on their main, secondary, or trade name database. There are so many stencils it is very hard to id many. I have one of those mysteries.

Cornet1 is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Can anyone ID my Horn?

I suspect that this has something o do with the late Eddie Calvert who was a world famous trumpet star in the 1940's and 50's,...in fact, probably the last solo trumpet player to record multiple hit records in the 'pop' charts. He was born in Preston, Lancashire of a brass band family and by the mid 50's was a household name. Like a lot of the 50's stars he was overwhelmed by the 60's pop scene and retired to South Africa.

He was a great self promoter so it would be highly likely that he attempted to sell his name on trumpets.

Some characteristics have the look of an old Getzen, while others do not.......just thinking out loud.....

Re: Can anyone ID my Horn?

It reminded me of a Conn, so I went looking. The Pan American 58B
has a lot in common with your horn. Take a look.

The Conn Loyalist

Conn sold the Pan Am line to many, many outlets. Yours could be a Pan Am stencil with some after market adds. Does the serial number begin with a "P" ?

That pinky ring "C" also reminds me of the type of stylized bracing used on Conn saxes from the mid 60's on.

Then again, it might just be some companies copy.

I would agree on the resemblance, but I just have the feeling that Calvert is of an earlier time than the one on Connloyalist. Some proportions are not quite the same such as the water key placement and the distance between the brace and the end of the leader pipe and the pinky hook. The Calvert also has a fixed ring. It is impossible to unravel many of these horn's parentage, but fun to have everyone look and speculate.
