Conn 26A on eBay

Here is something that we don't see often:

C G CONN TRUMPET VINTAGE 1937 & RUDY MUCK MOUTHPIECE !! - eBay (item 270221520376 end time Mar-27-08 11:18:16 PDT)

A professional-level 1936 Conn 26A Director cornet, with auction ending this afternoon.

Conn Loyalist says at:

The Conn Loyalist

that the 1930's Directors were professional cornets.

According to:

The Conn Loyalist

the Conn 26A cornet had a #2-1/2 bore, which is the same .485 bore size as the Conn 5A and the 1950's-1960's Conn Directors.

Although the cornet on eBay definitely needs refinishing, it looks like it only has one dent on the 2nd valve slide, plus the lead pipe is sagging some, but those are minor repairs.
It will probably go cheap, which could be a real bargain for anyone who wants a 1930's professional-level cornet.

Isn't this eBay Conn 26A in about the same condition as your Conn 5A when you first bought it?

Probably....but I'd rather have the 5A (or even better, the 9A) on the Conn Loyalist site, too....

Mine was pretty rough, but I only paid $29 for it, and it had all the valve buttons.

Before (eBay pics)

After ($30 for corks, pads, paint remover, & metal polish)

Re: Conn 26A on eBay

Are you telling me all you have to do is remove the lacquer with paint remover and polish the brass to get results like that? Of course I know raw brass requires a lot of upkeep but still!. I have and old Martin cornet that I like to play sometimes that looks like crap. This inspires me. Anyone want to talk me out of it?

That's about it. Of course, like thos home improvement shows on TV, it's more trouble than it looks. You have to get a heavy-duty paint remover - the water based ones won't work well. Then, there's the hours of polishing to get into every nook and cranny to remove the heavy tarnish. And then, as you said, it has to be polished every so often to keep it looking good. And the dents will still be there......

I'm seriously considering spending the bucks for an overhaul on this horn. Even though I have a better cornet, it's a great player and I think I'll keep it.

Here's another picture to get you thinking....
