![]() | Conn 80A Victor I bought a 1959 Conn Victor 80A with Conn 4 mpc and case for $150.00. I bought it from a lady who bought if from the original owner in 1967. It has set in the case since about 1970. It only has a few small dents. The nickel valve casings and slides are beautiful. It plays bright and responsive with the Conn 4. With a Bach 5B it is more mellow. I am looking forward to getting a Wick 4B. How do I tune it to A? There are no marks on the tuning slides. Is the opera glass tuning slide for tuning to A or for fine tuning? If I want to take it apart for a soapy bath do I turn the wheel on the opera glass tuning slide until it comes off? I might not have got a fantastic price, but I did get a fantastic horn! Thanks, Bobby ![]() |

| Piano User | Re: Conn 80A Victor I got two, and those are fantastic. To change key to A, you should move the tuning slide, as well as the valve piston slides, until you get the right intonation. Some old models had a complicated system that change all slides at once. The Opera slide is to change the sound: If you want brighter, then the slide should be inside. To get a more dark-mellow sound, open until you get what you want. BEST WISHES !!!

![]() | Re: Conn 80A Victor Um, no. the opera-glass tuning slide is the main tuning slide. Use it to tune the horn to Bb, with the leadpipe tuning slide all the way in. The leadpipe slide is used to lower the horn to A. At least that's the drill with my 80A, which has the quick-change-to-A mechanism connected to the leadpipe slide. Since the OP's 80A doesn't have the mechanism, he can use whatever slide he wants for tuning.

![]() | Re: Conn 80A Victor I bought a cheap chinese chromatic tuner/metronome on ebay. Ran me about 10 bucks including shipping. Congrats on the Victor, if it's in playing condition you are gonna love it! I have a 1930 80A, silver plated with the big bore, and it's my favorite cornet. Awesome instrument. |
