Conn Connstellation Trumpet Dating

All,

I just received my Conn Constellation model 38B and need some help with the serial number as I cannot find it anywhere. The guy I purchased it from said it is 1966/1967 but would love to verify that. The serial number is: H92316 and it is Nickel Plated with brass slides and valve caps and bottoms. Any help will greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

Re: Conn Connstellation Trumpet Dating

The serial number should be on the left hand side of the second valve. I don't think Conn moved the number's location from the early Connies.

Maybe the trumpet has been replated and the numbers filled in?

Re: Conn Connstellation Trumpet Dating

The numbers are really clear, I expected to really see a letter after the H. Seems really strange.

The Conn Loyalist Web site confirms that your trumpet is from the 1966 time period.

The chart says:

"H31247 - 1966"
- quoted from
The Conn Loyalist

What might be confusing you, with reference to your other post about expecting to see 2 letters, that same chart says that the use of 2 letters at the beginning of the serial number started in 1973, with the "HA" in 1980.

Somewhere between 52-53 per serial list on Horn-u-copia. You have a nice horn.

Re: Conn Connstellation Trumpet Dating

I'm new to this site and jopined for some information. While I played the trumpet a kid I have not touched one in 35 years.

My father recently passed and left behind a C.G. Conn Connstellation made in Elkhart, USA. It has a 4 5/8" bell, and has seriual number of E51287. I would consider the trumpet to be in good to very good condition. It has some minor dings and scratches and one brace holding the bell to the slide area has come apart on one side. I read the Conn Loyalists comments on serial numbers but did not see one starting with E. Best I can tell it was made in or around 1965. Any ideas on values as best possible based on my description.
Thanks, My name is Walt

Conn loyalist does have a year with "E" - 1965, so your guess is correct

Re: Conn Connstellation Trumpet Dating

Walt,

First, let me extend my condolences.

Are you looking to sell this horn or pick up playing again? In the shape you describe, I have seen them go for 400 to 600, some higher. If you take it to a shop and get the brace re-soldered that would help and it should not cost much. That sized bell would make it a 36B, the 38B has a 5 1/8 inch bell and a little thicker braces. I have been watching Ebay and wanting one of these for a very long time. Every time one goes for around 400 bucks, I am broke. When I have 400, they all go for 6 or 7. One in real nice shape can get around 1000.

Ken

These horns are nickel plated and lacquered so if you want to put it on ebay, you need good pictures. To get enough light that it doesn't look like a brass horn, every little surface scratch will show up white, so much that most look like white haze all over the horn when in person it is nice and shiney. Maybe try some paste wax, like for cars before you take the pictures would help, I don't know for sure.

Well, I rambled on about something you may not be wanting to do, hopefully you will PM me and we can work something out. I would love to buy one of those horns.
Ken
