Re: conn victor new wonder cornet

Hi Jim,

I have a 1946 model Victor 80A. There were literally thousands made by Conn over the lifespan of the cornet. They are usually of no great value but do they play!
Lots of dixieland players like them. The instrument can be very flexible in sound depending on mouthpiece. Some folks here are pretty concerned with getting the correct mouthpiece shank. The short shank mouthpieces from Curry, GR and Yamaha have all worked well with my horn. Tom Turner, one of the heavy hitters here has one and I believe his advice was to use the "opera glass" tuning slide for adjusting intonation and using the main slide for tuning down to the key of A.
I hope you enjoy yours as much as I have mine.

Regards,

Brian

Re: conn victor new wonder cornet

Hi Jim,
I have a Conn New Wonder, serial No. 2753xx and it sits on top of my piano in the lounge. Great to play, and love the sound. Soft, mellow and cross between a cornet and flugel IMO. I use a Jet Tone Studio Model MF mpce, and enjoy ballads etc. It has great engraving and gold wash bell in and out; looks pretty.

Value - not great. Enjoyment to play an Old horn = Immense pleasure.

Enjoy it!

Re: conn victor new wonder cornet

Hi Jim

I will echo what everyone has said - I play a Conn 80A Victor with a Denis Wick Heritage mouthpiece - great sound and a joy to play. The unusual tuning mechanism is the opera glass tuner. One thing I will say about these Conns is that they do seem mouthpiece sensitive - unlike my more modern trumpets the Conn "sound" does need the right mouthpiece - since I switched to the flat top Denis Wick it just sounds so much more mellow. Enjoy!

Re: conn victor new wonder cornet

I have never heard anyone say anything but great things about Conn Wonder Cornets. Apparently they are great players.

Here is one from 1927, Serial # 196XXX.. It's not in the best of shape, but could be restored.. What will this end up selling for? I have no idea.

Con Victor New Wonder 80A
