Re: Do I Want A Martin Committee?

Say Toobz -- is that a 12AU6?

You give good advice. Do you have any suggestions where to look other than EBAY?

Re: Do I Want A Martin Committee?

Ebay is where I like to find stuff. However, my best finds all came locally. My Committee and my Gold plated Conn all came from my local swap meet for pocket change. I've also found a highly desirable 1945 Conn 10M Tenor sax at a local yard sale.
Ebay has allowed me to own and play many more horns. Far more then the few I've found locally. I do get nervous spending large sums on Ebay, and most of my Ebay purchases are fairly low in cost as a result. But I can't think of any other place where you'll have as much to choose from as Ebay.
If I was throwing down some big coin on Ebay. I would follow every single Committee auction that comes along. Sooner or later, a horn will sell under the usual pricing. Ebay is funny sometimes. One day an item will sell for a lot less, and on another day, for a lot more.
Being patient and careful will get you want you want, but it can be frustrating. Buying any horn off of the internet always contains some risk, but you can minimize the risk and end up with some good deals if you keep at it long enough. And hey, if I hear of a good deal on a Committee, I'll let you know .

Good luck !

As for my avatar, good eye! It sounds like you've seen an Amperex Bugle Boy tube before. I do have a couple of 12AX7 and 12AU7 Bugle Boy tubes in a box somewhere around here. I've always liked the image, so I borrowed it for my avatar.

Speaking of local finds. My local swap meet paid off again today !
I bought a Conn New Wonder 80A Cornet. Included are all of the
extra tuning slides and original case. Set me back a whopping $40.

I know it's no Committee, but I'm pretty happy !

Re: Do I Want A Martin Committee?

I have an old Committee, large bore with "3" stamped on the second valve case.
Great lead horn with a fat thick sound. I've played many a horn and most are too bright and edgy; good if your the only one the audience wants to hear. The Committe has a rich powerful sound that blends while waking up the guy in the back row---it's obviously hard to explain the type of sound you get.
I've heard Holton designed Maynard's MF horn from the large bore Committee. In my opinion the old Committees are similar but not as bright. I think the Holton's were larger horns as well.

My three cents.

P.S.
O.J. did it.

I was going to say 12AX7 at first but your Avatar looks a little "elongated" for that tube. Seems to me that the 12AU6 is a longer tube and the 12AX7 is about 3/8" shorter.

For what its worth....

Re: Do I Want A Martin Committee?

You should buy a Martin Committee. I have a Committee Deluxe with the flower bell logo. Horn is from 1948. Horn was reworked about 20 years ago and I play once or twice a year right now. I am original owner. One or two small dents were removed and re-laquer.

I own about 10 other horns and Committee is the most lively of the bunch.
It's a great jazz horn and very open. I have a King Sliver flare and the Committee is very open compared to Kings or Bach Strads.

Went to Maynard's 75th birthday (when he was still here). Let him take a few licks on this horn. It's a bit darker than his Holton he was playing, new horn fully gold plate.

Maynard told me in the 1950's he played the Committee Deluxe. He later switched to Conn Connstellation because Conn paid him to endorse.

Great Story from Maynard. Miles Davis was playing in the same club with Maynard and had a problem with his horn before the gig. Maynard loaned him Committee and after the gig he switched over to Committee. True story.

Re: Do I Want A Martin Committee?

I love my Committee and many here think I only love Olds...... The Committee is the most difficult horn to
1. Get
2. Describe
3. Put down once you start playing
4. Let go (sell)

It's hard to get a good tone when you are fighting a smile.....

Re: Do I Want A Martin Committee?

I have a 1953 Los Angeles Olds Recording and a 1956 medium bore Martin Committee Deluxe. Both are great horns but very different. The Olds is probably the most responsive horn I have in my collection. It's mellow but brightens when pushed or using a lead mouthpiece. The Martin has a darker sound that is what some would describe as smokey and very distinct. Nothing else sounds quite like it. I don't think you can go wrong with either horn.

Re: Do I Want A Martin Committee?

You won't know until you buy one. However, do your research. If you buy a new one, it won't sound like a vintage Martin. If you buy an old Martin, you have to watch out for red rot. I own a 1953 and its a great horn. It helps add another dimension to my sound.
