![]() | Do I Want A Martin Committee? Ok, I admit I have been reading about horns here simply for the purpose of selecting my 2nd trumpet... I play an Olds Recording that I have had since about 1966 and I love it. I just need a 2nd horn. Sometimes, I just think I should buy another Recording Model from EBAY and spend some bucks fixing it up. Then lately I have been thinking about a classic Committee model. What I like about my Olds is the mellow sound and the heavy feel. When I touch my Recording Olds I feel like I am handling something that is of substance. I purchased a couple of other horns in great condition but both of them are small bore and lightweights. My Olds is a medium bore and feels fantastic in my extra large hands. I am a BIG guy and I need to have a horn that matches my size. I have tried to find a classic Martin to try but no luck. My only choice is to pay for one from EBAY and then if I don't like it, sell it back. I would love some advice here for another horn. Basically, I travel a great deal and I want a second horn to take on the road. My Olds I have had since I was a teenager and I get worried that it will get stolen or worse, damaged while on the road. I love the Zeus website and the description of how they build horns. They look to be similar to what I think would be good for me. I love this forum and I would take any advice given here to heart. Greg

![]() | Re: Do I Want A Martin Committee? Hey Greg-as for a vintage Martin Committee, I believe that the only way to know for sure is to actually play one for a bit. The old Committee's have a very distinctive feel and sound to them-sounds like your Olds does as well. Also it's my expierence that older horns each seem to have there own personality and vary from horn to horn of the same model, and newer horns are more uniform. Perhaps some seller will let you try it before you finalize the sale. Best of luck and congrats on the Olds!

Greg, if you need a second horn, you will also need a third and fourth, so the order in which you buy them is not as significant as finding good ones. A good Martin will definitely give you an additional palette of colors! The 3rd and 4th horns would be a Bach/Yamaha for when you need a "standard" sound and then something bright when you need more edge in your sound!

![]() | Re: Do I Want A Martin Committee? Buying a second horn is the beginning of a slippery slope. I don't have a Martin Connittee yet but it is on my radar. My next horn is going to be a Conn Coprion bell, I think. I do like my Olds Recording, though. It isn't my main Bflat (Bach Strad 43 Sterling bell), but it is a nice horn. |

![]() | Re: Do I Want A Martin Committee? Greg...Check out what Committee's are going for (been a real zoom up in pricing in the past year). I mean IF you're concerned about your Olds "on the road"...forget the Committee. You can buy two Olds for the cost of a "good" Committee these days, (and I'm NOT faulting the Olds...have several...just financial reality)

![]() | Re: Do I Want A Martin Committee? I've found that getting the correct gap between the end of the mouthpiece and the leadpipe can be a factor. I use Reeves sleeves to get the right gap and it makes a difference in how the horn plays. Bill Simenson |

I haven't tried many other horns in my life. I do have a few of other vintage horns but I don't consider them "players". Both are Martin and lighter and brighter. I like a larger bore with a more mellow tone. I was just thinking I might be missing another horn that I might enjoy as much as I have my Olds. Greg

![]() | Re: Do I Want A Martin Committee? Martin Committees have gone up quite a bit, but so have many other vintage horns like your Olds. I believe this makes buying one online less risky than buying a new horn online. If you do happen to get a turkey, chances are the high demand will allow you to resell it, often for a profit. You probably won't get rich buying and selling this way, but if you're patient, and do your homework, you should do well. If you can swing one now, do it. Why live with "I should have tried one". You may not love a Committee, but you'll probably enjoy the experience of trying one, at the very least. I know I have !
