Re: Does anyone recognise this cornet mouthpiece?

That's not what I meant...I am not an expert in really old stuff as far as cornet mp are concerned. I thought that Kosicups were made by Besson which is why I asked if in your pic there were Kosicups. You seem to have quite a few of the old cornet mouthpieces...Good stuff. Almost all mouthpiece on the pic I provided are Courtois' (except one made in Manchester).

Re: Does anyone recognise this cornet mouthpiece?

Generally those old pieces with the flat rim and shaprp edges are called "cookie cutters" Wick is remaking similar pieces and selling them as the Heritage series. They are touted for yielding the classic round cornet sound.

Tom Turner, who frequents this forum, has written about these as a sure solution to teaching us to play with minimal pressure, since otherwise injury is likely.

Re: Does anyone recognise this cornet mouthpiece?

Yes but that is basically untrue for anywhere other than the USA,..not wish to offend. The old time mpcs have all essentially got the same rims as do Denis Wick mpcs. You can go into any UK brass band and find plenty of players who can perform well if yo give them one of these old mpcs to play on. There is a lot of criticism on the web by USA players about th erims of D3nis Wick mpcs, but what they don't seem to get is that if yo make the rim thicker/fatter then there is a corresponding penalty in flexibility and in UK bands flexibility is an essential. Also they don't know or realise that it's already all been done here when it ccomes to cornets and there have been several 'revivals' in mpc styles (the 'Heritage' is just the current revamp) such as the thicker rimmed 'kosicup' models and although they still have their adherents, they have largely been shown to be inferior to the time honoured patterns.

Re: Does anyone recognise this cornet mouthpiece?

I have a similar piece...

...that sounds very nice on my 19th century cornet, but sounds terrible on all the modern cornets I've tried it on. On new horns, the sound is very dull and dead, not the rich sound you'd expect from such a deep, conical cup. It doesn't project too well on the old cornet, though. I play a Wick 4B on my cornet in brass band and have much better endurance on it than on this old piece.

Re: Does anyone recognise this cornet mouthpiece?

My advise is to send it to Kanstul or Picket Brass and get an exact copy of it.
