![]() | eBay jewel "Abstract Instrument" Check out this listing. 220487401227 If you're even remotely familiar with Drum Corps, you'll see why I find this listing so amusing. The seller also ignored my "questions" regarding the accuracy of the listing. |

![]() | Re: eBay jewel "Abstract Instrument" The seller is obviously not a native English speaker, but I'm wondering where the heck he got the idea a 2-valve bugle is for jazz... or that it's from the 1950s. No info about make or model, either. I'd guess it's an Olds, based on the 1st valve slide saddle, but I don't remember them having two water keys.

![]() | Re: eBay jewel "Abstract Instrument" Come on and cut the guy some slack. He is just an old school Jazz player and the horn is perfect for Jazz you just have to skip every third note. Oh my mistake, that makes the horn perfect for Polkas .... LOL

![]() ![]() | Re: eBay jewel "Abstract Instrument" As someone who is not remotely familiar with Drum Corps (other than videos posted here), I am curious what triggered your amusement and what types of questions you asked. That, of course, is in addition to the question of what notes this horn will actually play. The overall length of the tubing appears longer than a Bb trumpet and since he didn't show both sides, it is hard to tell anything about the relative lengths of the slides so that makes it difficult go guess how it plays.

![]() | Re: eBay jewel "Abstract Instrument" After 4 years of drum corps, I may be a bit more unwilling to cut some hack a break than others. And that horn can play some jazz for sure (and some polka if you just gotta have it)... Check out some Blue Devils or maybe some '88 Madison Scouts, if you don't believe me. The issue I have is after pointing the a**hat in the right direction to place a more accurate (and NOT misleading) listing, I was ignored initially. He did respond today and said his band director told him that nonsense, but he "didn't know" how to correct his listing. By the way, his listing shows a soprano bugle, pitched in G. Also, I may well have bought the thing from him if he actually made an effort to be accurate. Not like I could gig with the thing, but it does bring back the memories. |

![]() | Re: eBay jewel "Abstract Instrument" The two valved G bugle was the primary instrument that was practically designed for drum corps, obviously having nothing to do with jazz. What makes it ironic is that they were the only "trumpet like" instrument allowed on the field in DCI up until 2000, when the Cadets first used the trumpet under the new rules. The point is, they're not that obsolete (or shouldn't be), and as mentioned anyone who knows anything about drum corps (I've been in marching band only two years) should know what they are.
