I just started playing again after a 25 year hiatus. I have a King cornet that I bought years ago for $100, that was made in the late 70's. Tonight I was at the inlaws and asked my father-in-law about some old horns he said he had before. One was a badly bent and broken silver trumpet with no name I could find. The other one though, was a King Silvertone which according to the serial # was made in 37-38. It needs a lot of TLC, but I'm going to get it fixed up. The valves need to be fixed, very sticky. And a bunch of little dings all over. Of course two of the slides are stuck as well, and the top hook is gone.I just need to find someone trustworthy to fix it without breaking me. LOL. Nice to join the group.

If you want a reasonably local shop, my advise would be Kanstul in Fullerton,Ca. My personal choice for such a fine artist grade instrument,( I played one for several years in my youth until it was stolen ),would be Charley Melk in Wisconson. His work is absolutely superlative, and that old Silvertone is definately worthy of the absolute best. There are very few trumpets in existance that are better in any way. There are NONE that can match its beauty. That is a hand engraved solid sterling silver bell with gold wash on the bell logo area and inside the bell.

Re: First post

There is no gold wash on the bell, just all silver. Maybe it wore off. It even has the original case which is in pretty decent shape. The mouthpiece is an Olds #3. I'll try to get some pics today to post. I'm very thrilled to find such a great horn. Now I just have to get my lip back in shape. 25 years
is a long time to not play. I remember how, just my lip is way out of shape. Like learning all over again. Thanks to all the comments from everyone.
Thanks,
Wylde Bill

Re: First post

I repeat. Get that fine old thing to Kanstul or Charley Melk. It deserves to be properly cared for. If you have any sense of what a fine instrument is you will want that one back into top shape without having some 'horn hack' mess it up for evermore. On top of which, you haven't paid anything for it, so, the cost of repair should still be a fraction of its market value. Sentimental value, not withstanding, considering who you got it from.
