Re: Francis Larkin

Larkin was a major manufacturer in NY and pioneered mail-order selling in the late 1800s-early 1900s. They founded and operated subsidiaries to produce not only the products they sold but the items they used as promotions. I don't know about musical instruments or the Francis Larkin Music House: are there any old Larkin catalogs still around? (Frank Lloyd Wright's first big commission was to build the Larkin Administration Building - one of the Great Buildings of America, but torn down around 1950.)

Maybe an antique dealer would be able to help?

Good luck,

Jude

Re: Francis Larkin

I grew up in Binghamton. Larkin was one of the area's big music stores in the 70's. I had no idea that they ever made their own instruments let alone a trumpet!

How does it sound?

Ebay has a number of references to the Larkin Company of Buffalo, NY, if that's the one. Different sellers of antiques list flyers for a number of products sold by Larkin. One has various pianos (made by Knabe). Couldn't find anything for other instruments. Many large music houses around the country and Dept stores such as Sears and Wards had American or foreign instrument makes supply them for sale. You can learn more at the Horn-u-copia site. I suspect it is a stencil from some manufacturer as was so common. Maybe you could post some other views so we could see the design characteristics and maybe relate it to something.
