Getzen Super Deluxe Trumpet

Hello, I was looking for some help. I am placing a Getzen Super Deluxe Trumpet, serial number 46474 on Ebay and I do not know anything about it, so I wanted to make sure it was trumpet and not a cornet. II found some pics on Getzen so I am fairly sure its a trumpet but there were some old music books in the case and they say cornet Bb

Re: Getzen Super Deluxe Trumpet

You definitely have a trumpet. The band methods books were invariably marked "cornet" by tradition, but trumpets in a mixed sectiion were not excluded. Many composers of concert pieces write separate parts for cornet and trumpet which can be played by either, of course, but most modern concert bands are populated mostly by trumpets these days.

If the serial number has no Letter prefix it was made prior to Getzen's fire of 63 when the records were destroyed. Sometimes you can get someone's idea of the age by looking thru ebay current and completed auctions for similar models. I would also suggest going to Horn-u-copia and look through the Getzen thread.

I believe the ring around the bell is called a "Krantz" ring of copper. I believe they have very thin bells and prone to damage.
You might want to check to see if the valve slides ends pull out or are stuck. They are used to tune the horn or perform maintenance. The main tuning slide is at the curve of the leaderpipe that runs from the mouthpiece insertion point around and has a spitvalve on the lower curve. There is a spitvalve also on the smaller third valve slide . These ends are supposed to pull out easlily, if regularily greased, but can be stuck due to lack of maintenance over a long period. If they are, do not force them, as damage can result.

It was good you didn't do anything to the stuck valve. It may be something simple, but you don't know. Getzen always have made great valves.

There is one now listed on shopgoodwill.com - Welcome with a lot of knowlegeable info on
Getzens.

Talking Re: Getzen Super Deluxe Trumpet

Wow, thank you so much for all of the information. I greatly appreciate it. I have been going through the attic in my parents house and found all of these music instruments, but being ignorant about them , I have just had to try and research them as best as possible. Yes the bell is very thin but only has a few minor dings, so I guess its still alright. I will check the things you listed to see if they are in working order. I just sold a Buescher sax from 1925 on Ebay, so now I'm down to the last two instruments.

Again, I truly appreciate your help and your knowledge. Sandy

Re: Getzen Super Deluxe Trumpet

Glad to help. I am sure I would appreciate your instruments also, if I could afford them. Very good attic finds. Protect that bell at all costs. Will collapse with any banging on something and the condition of the bell on these horns is always of great interest to potential buyers.

Re: Getzen Super Deluxe Trumpet

HI All,

I am wondering why these horns seem to command such relatively high prices on Ebay. They were originally designed for ease of repair and if you have ever played one ...
Ok, they look pretty with the tri-tone finish and bell ring but man, they quack like ducks when you play 'em IMO,

Cheers,

Brian

Re: Getzen Super Deluxe Trumpet

Hi, don't think your question is "looney", speaking of ducks! I seem to recall people say they play with a fairly bright sound. OLDLOU has several and maybe he will chime in on their playing qualities and I imagine others will also.

I certainly will!! I have two of them and they both play much like many other top grade trumpets of that era, BRIGHT and FOCUSED. This is not the current fad for ever darker sounding trumpets. I do have to be cautious about when, where, and how I play my old Getzens. A conductor of one of the community concert bands that I used to be a member of disliked my Getzens because he had built a trumpet section of all dark sounding trumpets. Another conductor of yet another two community concert bands that I currently play in states that he like the old Getzens for the true "trumpet type sound" that they produce. I also use one or the other of them in a gospel brass ensemble, accompanying the song services in a monstrous hymnsing at one of our local mega churches, to be able to fill the humungous auditorium. I feel that I am able to 'play to' any one in that 1,400 person auditorium. Brett Getzen has made the published statement that his personal favorite trumpet of all that his company has made is still the Super Deluxe.

OK,

I defer to the OldLou whose opinion is worthy of respect although I still don't like them, personally

Cheers,
