![]() | Got a Holton Super Collegiate Trumpet I wanted one to make a "twin" or "matched set" with my 1960 Super cornet and I got this one Sunday. HOLTON SUPER COLLEGIATE TRUMPET //////// - eBay (item 280246415358 end time Jul-19-08 22:06:34 PDT) It is a 1959 with a bad finish, but hopefully it plays well and I will strip it to raw brass like the cornet and hope I can find something under it all to polish. The cornet shines like the day it left the factory, I'd be very pleased if this one comes close. I think the nickle and copper should come up but I'm not too sure about some areas of the brass itself. I'll post again after I get the horn and have a chance to check it out.

![]() | Re: Got a Holton Super Collegiate Trumpet Hello Newguy; I own a 1954 Holton Super that I purchased from John at Trumpettrader. It had been overhauled in laquer when I bought it but I do not know who did the work. These were considered an intermediate horn, supposedly a re-design by Al Hirt. I am a former pro player trying to come back and I was surprised at how well mine played. Not stuffy! It is .459 but plays more open than the Bach ML37 I had for many years. It also has a beautiful sound due to the copper and nickel bell. I can send pictures if you like or post them in the "eye candy thread. I play mostly jazz but I find it to be pretty versatile. I just switched to a Monette Prana B6 Slap1 and it helped me and the horn considerably. Good luck with the repairs. You may have a diamond in the rough. Paul

![]() | Re: Got a Holton Super Collegiate Trumpet Hi Paul, I'm surprised to hear that you have a '54 with a copper bell behind the nickle. I thought they used a yellow brass behind the nickle until about 57-58, making them the tri-color horn. Very unusual. What is your serial number? I wish I could find out more about these horns. This is the first I have heard of a mention of Al Hirt linked to the horn. Makes me even happier to have one!! I am just starting to learn to play trumpet -- 4 months now -- and am very pleased with my super cornet and hope the super trumpet is close to it. The horn is on it's way, might be here today or tomorrow if I'm lucky. Thanks for the info on your horn -- I'll post back after I get a chance to check out the new super when it gets here.

![]() | Re: Got a Holton Super Collegiate Trumpet I got the '59 Super Collegiate Trumpet from Ebay and the first thing I noted after the fact that the bell was, as stated, very creased, was that one of the finger buttons was in the bottom of the case and the second one fell off as I picked up the horn!! They were buttons from some other horn and were not even the correct thread which is why they were falling off. An email to the seller soon resulted in a partial refund that more than paid for replacement buttons, I also replaced the felts, inside and out while I was at it, and the water valve corks were of course shot and I replaced them also. I need to get one brace resoldered and then think about having the bell repaired. In the meantime, I have stripped it, and used MAAS to polish it and attached are pictures, the first two are as it was on Ebay and the last three are shown with it's younger brother, the '60 Super Collegiate Cornet that got me started looking for the trumpet to match. Ladies and gentlemen -- The Supers!!!!

![]() | Re: Got a Holton Super Collegiate Trumpet Well, Lou, That's because I was still in negoiations concerning the finger buttons. Now that all is settled, I can make things known to the general public. BTW everyone, I forgot to mention, the horn plays extemely well, I am very pleased with it.

![]() ![]() | Re: Got a Holton Super Collegiate Trumpet I am glad that you are enjoying your vacationing swing through the East by stopping to sociallise with other trumpet/cornet 'accumilators'. When are you due to be back in 'Kazoo'? I am thinking that it has been too long since our last lunch in Dorr. I have a couple of recent acquisitions to show to you. OLDLOU>>

![]() | Re: Got a Holton Super Collegiate Trumpet Hi Bernie; Here are some pics of my Super Collegiate. As you stated previously, it may not have the copper bell but it still sounds great. Hope your restoration is coming along well! The mouthpiece is a Monette Prana B6 Slap 1. Regards, Paul S.

![]() | Re: Got a Holton Super Collegiate Trumpet Thanks for the pictures, Paul. Always like to see another Super, I don't think there are toooo many out there. I'm glad yours plays well also. Since I am just starting, see MFfan, (Dave's), comments above about playing mine, even though just for a few moments. Some day I hope to be half as good as the horn.
