Got an opinion about these 2 cornets?

I have a 1953 Olds Ambassador Cornet and a early 1900's Noblet cornet. I'm having a difficult time parting with either one. The Ambassador has that big Olds sound (a la cornet), and the Noblet has a sweet darker tone. Both sounds are pleasing to me. The Noblet has more resistance than the Olds. I can't make up my mind about which is more in tune with itself, or which of the two slots better. There's no reason for me to have 2 cornets seeing how I will probably play it infequently, and need the money more than 2 cornets. Can someone help me decide which of the two horns is wiser to keep? .........crow

The wiser decision is the one you come up with. Which one do you like better. Maybe flip a coin... but make a decision!

Re: Got an opinion about these 2 cornets?

Keep them both and find another place to get the money. Read your post... you love those horns. If you get rid of either of them you will regret it in the future.

Some things are just things, and some things have emotional value. I bet there are lots of things in your home that you could sell for as much money that don't mean as much.

Eat a smaller lunch for 2-months -- drink water (from the tap) instead of soft drinks or coffee for a couple months. Adjust the thermostat to save a few $$$ for a few months. Carpool, work some extra hours, teach a few lessons, or get a second job for a couple months.

It is worth a personal sacrifice to keep something we love, or to get something for someone we love. DO what you got to do, but keep both horns.

As a very old and infirm man, looking at the end of life in the very forseeable future I totally agree!!!!!!!!

Re: Got an opinion about these 2 cornets?

I'm not going to keep 2 cornets. I'm trying to size down because there's an absurdity factor in MY (not yours) collecting more than I really need. I was hoping for a response like: Keep the Noblet because they're harder to find. Or, the Noble has more money value than the Olds. Or, the olds is made better than the Noble and will hold up better. Or,..............try again.........crow

If you like both equally well and need cash, sell the one that will bring the most money. Otherwise, I'd keep the one that's harder to replace (in other words, dump the Olds).

Re: Got an opinion about these 2 cornets?

Yep, that's what I did a few years ago. I wanted to buy a good cornet for brass band, and have a daughter in college, so the cash was a little tight. I had two Bach Strad 43 trumpets - a '55 Mount Vernon and a '77 Elkhart. The Elkhart played just as well as the MV, so the MV went on eBay. I bought this cornet with the proceeds from the MV and still had $900 left over for the college account. The Elkhart 43 is a great horn - I'm still playing it and don't miss the MV a bit....

Re: Got an opinion about these 2 cornets?

Yep, I must agree with Mr. Proctor.

Ambassadors are fetching good dollars these days. It may not play any better than the Noblet, but it will sell for more. I think that's because so many horns are bought without the benefit of a play test. A horn with a proven track record like the Ambassador represents less risk to the eBay type buyer.

If you really regret selling your Olds, you will most likely be able to find another one in a few weeks. There are so many around. The Noblet on the other hand, is seldom seen.

My personal take on this is that you can only play one horn at any given time. Switching back and forth is not good for me. Idiosynchrasies of pitch and response makes it necessary for me to dedicate myself to one horn. It's fun to own more horns, but I can really only use one at a time.

I understand the need for freeing up money. Look around carefully to see anything else can be sold as well. Frugality has its benefits of course.

Best of luck to you!

Re: Got an opinion about these 2 cornets?

Crow, there is a nice Noblet French cornet on ebay right now, estimated 1930, but who knows? Lister is asking $299 buy it now, or offers considered. If that horn sells in the next 3 days of the sale, you might get an idea of the value of yours. Olds Ambassadors cornets are sure not getting that much.
