Holton Llewellyn Model

Hey,

I'm very excited--I just won a Holton Llewellyn Model trumpet on Ebay! I've heard some great things about these horns! I have a couple questions about this. Here's the link to the Ebay site: Ebay post

A) Is a trumpet that says "Llewellyn Model" the same thing as a Llewellyn Revelation? I've found a lot online about Llewellyn Revelations and Deluxes, but nothing about plain old Llewellyns.

B) What are some good places to get parts for trumpets like this? As you can see from the auction page, it's missing 2 valve caps, and I'd like to see if I can find a 3rd valve slide ring for it. I'd like to stick to as original as possible.

I'd also be glad for any information on these that you can give me! These seem like fascinating horns! Thanks.

Re: Holton Llewellyn Model

Kat,
Congratulations! That looks like it will be a good one when you polish her up. The third slide ring looks like it is in the case in the pic, laying loose just above the horn in a couple pics. As far as finding bottom caps, it may take a while, many shops have old parts horns and you may get lucky. Your horn is from 1929 in case you didn't know. I have a 1924 Revelation and I just checked my horns and the bottom caps from my 1925 Conn 22B fit it, the ambassador do not. That may help you in your search, if you can't find originals right away you may have luck finding others that fit for now.

I don't know much about the LL's but it resembles my Revelation if that helps. If it plays anything like mine you will be very pleased, it has an exciting sound. You also got a good price on it, lots of room even if you need a repair shop to do some work. Heck, even if you have to spend 250 bucks for a valve job, you will come out ahead because that is a quality built pro level horn, and just wait till you polish it up!
Let me know how it is when it gets home ok?

Kat,
I looked at the pics again, you may have trouble with the leadpipe, looks like two bad dents in it to me. Can't tell from the pics either but on these old ones, sometimes the leadpipe could be rotting out. Worse case scenario, you can get a new leadpipe done for about $125 to $150, maybe less if you are friends with the local shop. I have my fingers crossed for ya.

Yeah, I was SO thrilled with the price! I think since the buyer didn't know much about it very few people bothered to look at it. Unfortunately, I can't send it directly to the repairman as I don't have the money, but I will definitely keep that name on file so I know where to send it to have it repaired. I expect it will be a hefty bill!

You know, I wondered what that was! I thought it was some strange addition to the piping. It would be fantastic if it was in there.

I have been so thrilled as I research this trumpet and find that it was such a good horn. I am really excited. I can't wait until it gets here and I'll certainly post some pics of my own when I get it.

Thanks for responding, guys! I always know where to go if I have a question.

Re: Holton Llewellyn Model

I'd seen the Brass Review link--wow! Impressive!

I hadn't seen the Horn-u-copia link. Lots of information there, looks like. What beautiful instruments. As for the Llewellyn model pictured--now I know what mine is supposed to look like!

Thanks for all your help. You're great! I love this community.

Re: Holton Llewellyn Model

I just got the Llewellyn yesterday. It's more beat up than it looked in the pictures, but the engraving is gorgeous. The valves are REALLY stiff, and the 2nd valve slide looks like it got run over by a truck. There are several dings, rather large by the look of them.

It blows with some obstruction. One of the valves was in backwards, but I think they're in right now. I'm not sure what the problem is. I think it needs a real good cleaning. Is it safe to give this poor, weathered soul a bath in warm water with a soft washcloth and a snake? I certainly don't want to beat it up anymore! I need to get some Tarni-shield, too.

Re: Holton Llewellyn Model

By stiff do you mean like really strong springs or they don't slide well?

The little second valve slide should be fairly easy to fix, and it should not be very expensive at a shop to do it, I would guess 25 bucks if it is real bad. I had a dent worked out of one and he charged me 15, but it was one simple dent.

By all means, give her a bath! But the first thing to do is just hold it under the bathtub faucet, bell up and flush until clear water runs through, hold one valve down at a time. This way you flush out any loose stuff before you snake it. I try not to get the water too far from room temperature and I do not use any soap, dont want to accidentally leave anything in that might work against me down the road.

Once you blow all the water out, try blowing a tone through it while it is still all wet. If it blows real easy with a very bright tone while wet and gets stuffy after it is dry, then you might be looking at valves leaking, worse case, leaking slides, much easier and less expensive to fix. How bad are the dents in the leadpipe? That might be a source of your trouble too.
