Serial number, and model number would help...
glad to hear that you're picking up a great instrument.

it is a ycr 231, from what i understand it is a student model, but it will work for me until i can tell what makes one better than the others.

What you have lucked into is indeed a cornet designed for student usage, BUT, I have one and so do many other cornetists of the 'American Long Cornet' fraternity, including some of the best classical and jazz cornetists in the world. Your acquisition would be a rather poor choice for a British brass band, but, for most other genre it will do quite nicely. The difference between the 231 and its replacement, the 2310 is just that the 2310 has a rose brass leadpipe, supposedly to forestall red rot in the pipe. I have yet to see a 231 with such rot in the leadpipe, so, it was a sales pitch to be able to raise the retail price on the new model. ( My opinion ).

no rot here, although it would be hard to tell because of all of the scratches.

it is a sales pitch indeed, but if they dont design new instruments then they dont make money.

im happy with what i have, if i decide i want a better cornet in the future ill go to a music store instead on craigslist. it is plenty good enough for me to learn on.

That info was straight from Yamaha web site. It is notoriously difficult to get an info on them per many posts here and on TH.
