How to find info - Shuman Angel

Hi, New to the forum. Internet searching has yielded little. Haven't had the trumpet long. Love the sound. On the bell is "Patent Pending, Davis Shuman & Son Inc, New York". The serial # is 5 digit and each valve is numbered with the same stamped font as the serial #. "ANGEL" is in fancy letting, letter over letter, on the top of the horn above the marker's name. In a different font and orientation, "ANGEL" is on the 2nd valve. The only online resourse found regarding Shuman patent is for a turnable bell. This is not that trumpet.

Trumpet: davis shuman trumpet ., u s marine corps, trumpet player

Is this the reference you found? Looks like Davis Shuman was a notable trombonist and composer back in the 40's, teacher at Julliard, from 46-66 when he died of a brain tumor and according to a googled source, devised some off-angle trombone slide that wasn't successful with trombonists.

Fall 2004 newsletter

Interesting article. He was a Russian immigrant, evidently engineering talent, and I would say, dabbled in custom instrument making at some point.

Tell us how and where you came to have possession. That may give a clue. Also, post some photos showing some construction details. Someone may pick up on features that identify the manufacturer and also clues about how playable it is. Have you tried playing it yourself? what do you think of it?

Here is a Shuman Angel trumpet for sale:

Shuman Angel

It sounds like it was intended to be an ergonomic advancement, like the angled trombones.

I don't get it...how the bell is supposed to fix to the leadpipe (?) I did not see any screws, rails or whatever...Doesn't look very secure if the bell is fixed only be the bell screw (just after the valve cluster)...

Thatīs exactly my reaction, too!
A construction like the way it seems will
make the trumpet extreemly vulnerable!!

Re: How to find info - Shuman Angel

Thanks for posting the Dillon's listing and that Cousenon was the builder. Seems like the French will try anything I never thought of trying Dillon's. This still leaves the question on what the Davis Shuman company was about. Maybe just something he set up to try and market innovative instruments . Wish a company history was available. At least we have some additional knowledge just in case the subject pops up again. When the word "ergonomic" was mentioned , I had to think of the York Airflow cornets and trumpets.
