Yes Wilmer not only I but Kenny Dorham also, KD said of Izzy; "he has the biggest sound I ever heard." Izzy would tell Kenny "play one of your cadenzas", KD would blow some changes and Izzy would light up like a neon sign; "the man can play all of that music with no notes!" You don't hear players like either of these two anymore wilmer, everything is so "perfect" now.

Al Stewart
Al is really a well kept secret. Al played lead on the Machito records that featured Bird. I believe he also played lead on the Chico O' Farrell "Afro-Cuban Suite."
Al was one of the first guys to hire me when I got to NYC. Al was playing"Purlie" at time. Jimmy Sedlar and Dud Bascomb were the other guys in that section.
Al and I work quite a bit together. We did "Mack and Mabel" on Broadway.
What a shame that the show closed so quickly Robert Preston and Bernadette Peters were the stars. It was a Jerry Herman masterpiece.
Al made a record,"Museum of Modern Brass" that was spectacular. He plays picc on it and he burns.
That's Al.........Paulie Cohen is the bandleader referred to. Paulie played lead trumpet with everybody.
There are many serious senior lead players in Florida. Leon, Al, Paulie and the legendary Johnny Bello.
I am staying up north........it's hot for older lead trumpet players in Fla.
Wilmer

Hi Paul,

You don't know me but I emailed you a while back on a couple of vintage horn questions and you were very helpful - it's great to have you here on TM.

No lie and there's a mess of younger guys too.......legit, jazz, classical it's all covered. Al is playing very very little he moved to the west coast and he's pretty far from Tampa which put's him basically in the boonies. Bello sent me a recording of a thing he did with a young Carmen Mcrrae that knocked me out, he played such awesome ballads. You mentioned Dud Bascombe, I went to school with and played some with his son Wilbur is he still around?

Dud Bascomb Jr., is still around. I checked allmusic.com and came up with a ton of current stuff.
Dud Sr., was the real soloist on Tuxedo Junction, not Erskine Hawkins. A little trumpet trivia
