Re: Hurray for first vintage horn!

I just snagged a 46 King master with only, hopefully a dented leaderpipe. When I get it, we'll have to compare notes (pun intended)

Re: Hurray for first vintage horn!

Some...bad photos of my 1920's king master cornet, not in its original case.
By the way, can anyone identify the mouthpiece, it looks like a cookie cutter and sounds great!

Re: Hurray for first vintage horn!

Well, I got the 46 King Master cornet today, as described by the seller. Has a Silver bell, but not a Silver Tone. The Tarnishing is about as solid as any I have seen. Have gotten some of the Bell pipe cleaned off with several types of metal polish and MAAS and the silver is in great shape. I think I will have to get some Tarn-x or equivalent on this baby. The slides all move, including the micrometer but I haven't had a chance to clean everything. The leader pipe is a bit bent and pinched, but it has a nice tone quality and valves are good, though they probably could use some corks. It will be fun to get this one in shape, all for $41 plus shipping.

Re: Hurray for first vintage horn!

Hope you post a picture of the thing, it sounds beautiful! Does your valve have a different kind of silver plating than the rest of the horn? Mine seems like scratch silver...
Also what do should I use to clean the gold plating on the inner bell of the cornet?

Re: Hurray for first vintage horn!

Thanks, I'll have to take some pics and post from my Flickr assembly, I guess.
I don't know what a lot of the horn is going to look like, very thick tarnish. Your silver plating looks great. I don't know about the caps as yet, or your mp. Mine came with a weird Gretsch all range mp but it sounds like I was playing a Kazoo! I have been tooting on my usual King 7M. I took out the pistons and was amazed that they were bright , shiny and I can't see any wear from a cursory look. There are a couple of small dents in the the bell curve, but that's about it. Oh, it is a medium bore.

Re: Hurray for first vintage horn!

Well, in the light of day, looks like the cornet is just brass, but a fine player nonetheless. I guess I'll have to use the oven cleaner method and see how that works, or eventually leave it alone.

Re: Hurray for first vintage horn!

Do you mean the plating is raw brass or the bell?
Either way its still probably a great horn.

Re: Hurray for first vintage horn!

The whole horn is brass, apparently raw, maybe accounting for the severe tarnishing. I know there are threads on the subject of tarnish removal. I have used oven cleaner and scraping with copper glo on other horns, which works, but would like something easier. Very nice playing cornet.

Re: Hurray for first vintage horn!

Nice horn. I have one from 1904, not a Master - they didn't make 'em yet. Still very pretty though.

Your mp is a semi-cookie cutter, it has a rounder rim than the flattish sharp-cornered cookie cutters.

Re: Hurray for first vintage horn!

I like the King 7M, if that what you are referring to. Doesn't wear on the chops like a full cookie. That Gretsch that came with it has a wide rim that looks like all the finish has worn off of and a very shallow cup. Plays with a real bright tone, not what I like for a cornet. I got some Tarn -x but it didn't seem to have much effect on the baked on tarnish . I see a product from Flitz that is supposed to be able to do the job, Instant Brass and Copper Tarnish remover. Anyone have any experience with this product?
