Hurray for first vintage horn!

Just won my very first vintage horn, a 1920's kings master
Vintage 1920's KING MASTER MODEL SILVER CORNET - eBay (item 160342948008 end time Jun-25-09 18:44:00 PDT)

Looks like it'll need some work done, but I'm happy

Anyone know of a good tech near southern Delaware? I live close of Salisbury too.

Re: Hurray for first vintage horn!

It certainly looks like an interesting horn. I hope that you have a good repairman and that he can put it back in the condition that it deserves. Be sure to post some 'AFTER' photos and let us know how it plays once you are done. Also, if you can bring yourself to do it, maybe you could detail how much work it really takes to repair it so it can be a reference point for the rest of us that may be tempted to tackle such a project.
Good luck.

Re: Hurray for first vintage horn!

It looks like it has a lot of possibilities. The bad repair work is a little more extensive than average, perhaps, but there's certainly nothing there that suggests it couldn't be fixed up nicely. And you started off on the right foot - getting the basic horn for a decent price. Congratulations. If you decide to do any cleaning, oiling, and testing before shipping it off to a restorer, please be very careful and gentle with those stuck caps and pistons. What you find inside the cylinders will have a huge influence on the total restoration cost.

Re: Hurray for first vintage horn!

Congrats on a great horn. It is definately worth getting the repairs done correctly especially at the price you got it for!!! I saw this one but did not want another as I have several H.N. White Master cornets. They are great players and have good slotting and intonation. They can be a little darker than some other cornets depending on vintage, bore and set up. I use a standard shank mouthpiece (Bach 5B) in mine and they work fine. They do not seem to need a short shank like the early Conns.

Thanks for that info, I've been researching everywhere to see whether or not I would need a short shank.
I'm still looking around for some good techs. There are some music stores around but I still wanna expand my choices...

Re: Hurray for first vintage horn!

Well, it just arrived in the mail today and i have to say it is in a much better then I expected.

Looks like it'll only needs a good flushing and a tiny work on the leadpipe. But the disgusting part is that the valves had mold on them! EWW

Anyways another question for any king master owners, what type of mouthpieces did you find to work best with this cornet? A v, c, or a vintage cup?
