![]() | If you guys were me..what vintage horn would you look at? I've got a 1980 Bach Strad that I played in college at North Texas in the early to mid-80s. I also have a 1921 Buescher that as far as I Can tell, is not a very good horn. Probably a student model. My Dad owns a 1950's Vocabell (rimless bell) Conn Trumpet that he promises to give to me some day. I want something that's old and special, but still plays really well. Big open sound like some of those old Conn cornets with the open lead pipes. Should I look at a cornet? What do you recommend for my first good Collector's Horn?

![]() | Re: If you guys were me..what vintage horn would you look at? I would argue you already have your first good collectors horn...the Bach Strad. For a small sum you could look for a good Conn New Wonder / Victor. The Olds Recording would be a graet one to end with... Have a good journey. Cheers

Help those around you, and all of the other things. Concentrate on the important things in life. Death is a certainty, but fond memories keep some immortal. I think the market prices on vintage horns (except student/intemediate models) are ridiculous. The right vintage horn is the current best deal that fits in your budget. I would suggest an instrument that is COMPLEMENTARY to your present collection. If you don't have a cornet or flugel, that is a good place to start, after that maybe a higher pitched trumpet or an Eb alto trumpet. Diversity means that they will get played more! The odd instruments are harder to sell and that means better value for YOU!

![]() | Re: If you guys were me..what vintage horn would you look at? I've sold alot of great old horns, including a Burbank Benge 3X I swore I'd never sell. I've ended up with a '53 Olds Recording that I love. Best horn I've ever played. I'd like to have a nice old 40s-50's Strad. Have my eye on one. :)

The one on top is original, factory two triggers!. The other one was made "purdy" By Charlie Melk.

For these tighter older horns they like more open mouthpieces. You might try a more V-cup piece on it, such as a Denis Wick; my 1936 Supertone Bandmaster plays well with a Wick 3. I wouldn't be surprised if a Bach 5V or 5MV would work with it, either. As for something old and special and plays well, this Buescher 400 might work for you. Tom ![]() | |
