King Master Model

A question(s) about the King Master Model cornet with .458 bore:

I can only financially justify having one inexpensive cornet.
Due to health problems I need to go to a smaller bore.
I want a mellow tone on the cornet when I use my Bach 7, and I want to scream on the cornet when I use a Bach 7E.

With a shallow mouthpiece, how easy is the upper register (above High C) on a King Master Model cornet with .458 bore?
With a deep mouthpiece, how mellow does the Master Model cornet sound?
Does the Master Model cornet sound different with silverplate instead of lacquered brass?

Mine is medium bore in lacquer, but I find it quite free blowing and bright. Although it is brighter in tone than an Ambassador cornet, it can still sound mellow and full with a NY Bach 7c mp. Never tried playing much above the staff in the few days I had it before it went to the shop. However, I'm picking it up from the shop after work today, so I'll take some runs up above the staff and let you know (Understanding I'm no screamer). I've never played a silver plated one, so no opinion there.

Re: King Master Model

I have a superlative condition early King Master Model. It is capable of extreme high range. On my 'much better' days,, so am I. My only complaint on my elderly silver plated Master is that the third valve was not built to accomidate a throw ring. This does lead to 'some' intonation quirks that sometimes bug me. Mouthpiece selection will allow these old girls to sound any way that you want them to, within reasonable limits, of course. I don't expect any of my cornets to sound like my flugel. They just weren't designed for that.

What bore size is yours?
I am interested in the .458 bore version, although if one version is great for upper register then all versions should be to some degree, too, I would assume.

Do the old King Master Models from the 1940's-1950's accept modern Bach mouthpieces OK?
No need for larger diameter shank or for short-shank mouthpiece?

Re: King Master Model

Over the years I have owned and handled many King Master Model cornets. I have yet to find one that had an unusual sized receiver.

On another front; have you considered an Olds Ambassador cornet? They are certainly priced low enough on the current market, those made at Fullerton use common Bach shank mouthpieces, and their overall performance is actually far beyond anything anywhere near the same price. Not only that, there are so very many to choose from.

Re: King Master Model

having owned both the Ambassador and King Master my opinion is [and that is exactly what it is, my opinion] the Ambassador has more of a cornet sound. They are both good players and the tone can be colored by mouthpiece selection. If you run across a deal on either one you can't go wrong.

Re: King Master Model

Morris, I also join the kudos on the qualities of the Ambassador cornet. Great value and sound. Much bigger that my other ones.

My King MM is a bit brighter than an Ambassador, probably because it's a medium bore. The King is maybe a bit more sensitive to mouthpiece selection too, but I would agree that the Ambassador's got a warmer cornet-like all around tone. Considering the MM is a "pro" horn, it's amazing how well the Ambassador compares... and they're a lot cheaper too! I like them equally well, and actually play both every day
