Lacquer Strip on Martin Magna

I have a 1962 Martin Magna that I would like to strip the lacquer off of. It has a copper bell and silver slides. What would be the best way to do this? Are there any special precautions I should look out for?

Thanks!

Re: Lacquer Strip on Martin Magna

There are a multitude of postings on this subject here. Most of them are good.

My question to you is, why? The Magna is not only a superlative musical instrument, but, because of its musical excellence, the low number that were produced, and the years since they were made, they are VERY sought after by collectors, but, ONLY in their original and unaltered condition. Poor lacquer condition on these old Martins is common and only lowers the collector value slightly. If you strip it, it will lower that high value. Look at the lacquer condition of Chris Botti's old Committees.

Re: Lacquer Strip on Martin Magna

Hmmm...wasn't aware this horn was that rare. The reason for me wanting to remove the lacquer is cosmetic. I can see parts of it that are wore so I thought stripping the lacquer would be nice.

Here's a video of what it looks like:

That trumpet looks in good shape, cosmetically and mechanically. As Lou says, that model is pretty rare. If if were lucky to have one I would leave it alone, but that decision is up to you, of course.

I totally agree with my old friend Dave. I envy you that fine old instrument. Are you worthy of it?

Why wouldn't I be worthy of it? I take good care of my instruments.

The reason that I asked that question is that, most trumpeters would be thrilled with the appearance of your Martin, and would not consider desecrating that fine horn by stripping it. In my 'personal opinion', I have little care for the cosmetics of my horns as long as the music I can make with them satisfies my audiences.

Oh believe me, I have a Bach 43 that looks like hell lol! but I love it for the sound. The reason I wanted to strip the magna is just to give it a fresh look, but i'll take ur thoughts into consideration. Thanks!

Re: Lacquer Strip on Martin Magna

After looking at the video, I see your point and I agree with you. I think that trumpet would be a great candidate for a restoration. I know why MFfan and OldLou are arguing for leaving it as-is. There is a fine line as there is with any classic, collectible item such as cars, art work, jewelry, etc. Some things are better left in their original condition. Others need to be restored to really be appreciated. My brother has a 1956 Mercedes Benz roadster which is still in original condition. Most people (including me) think that is has gone "over the line" into disrepair and really needs a restoration. He disagrees. So, every person has their own sense of where that line is.

In the case of your trumpet, I think it would benefit from a restoration but it really needs to be done by a professional to gain the greatest benefit from that work. It is too easy to screw it up if not done right.
