Leadpipe for Vintage Cornet

About a year and a half ago, I got a Conn New Wonder Bb/A cornet for $50 on ebay; the serial # dates it to 1918. It has had a repair to the leadpipe which is very ugly and leaks air, not to mention the brace closest to the mpc reciever is not the original (I am scared to think what may have happend to this horn before I bought it.) I was wondering if anyone knows of a good place to get a leadpipe built for this cornet that would be period correct. It is the first piece of what I hope to be an emaculate trumpet collection one day and I would like to get it as close to original as I can.

Re: Leadpipe for Vintage Cornet

Do you think it has been hacked to accept modern sized mouthpiece shanks?
You could check with Charlie Melk. I think I had heard about someone having him work on an old Cornet leadpipe.

Re: Leadpipe for Vintage Cornet

No, this is definatly a repair. The mpc that came with it is no where near new, unfortunatly it is not the original mpc. It is a Frank Holten & Co. 77 made in Elkhorn Wis. I will try to get some pics up sometime soon, but as I am packing to leave friday morning to move back to college, I don't know when I will have time for the pics.

Money pit alert!!!!

You'd be better off finding a better example to start with. You'll dump far more money into a damaged vintage horn like this than it's worth. Unless you can find all original parts for the repair, the collectability will suffer. It's one thing to return a horn to playing shape and make it nicer cosmetically, and another thing to do a complete, proper restoration for a collection.

Re: Leadpipe for Vintage Cornet

oh, yeah I was mad last night. I found the same horn from 1917 ( a year older) with the original parts, but had some bad dents in the bell on ebay. But i dont have the funds to get it with college fees due in a week. 'Tis sad to be me.

That horn is probably not worth the overhall/restoration job you need.

Re: Leadpipe for Vintage Cornet

Just get it patched and play for a while. You might decide that you don't even like it that much. OR you might decide that you want to find a perfect one later.

Re: Leadpipe for Vintage Cornet

it was patched previously, and I do like it. It sounds rather nice and is a fun horn to play hymns on when im tired of messing around on my Bb.

Re: Leadpipe for Vintage Cornet

I inherited several of my Dad's trumpets and cornets, among which are old Conns like the one you described. Some are perfect; some suitable for parts and some suitable for rebuild. Can you post a picture of yours? Perhaps I can help you out.

Also, I have some truly unique parts that I cannot identify and horns that defy description .. all are from pre-1950, as near as I can tell. If you can help identify them, I'll be happy to post photos.

This is the first I have heard of different sized moutpieces/moutpiece receivers in cornets. I just bought an early 50's Olds Ambassador cornet on eBay. The mouthpiece does not fit into the receiver. Actually it fits, but it goes in all the way and does not fit snugly. The shank never meets the receiver. Are different sized mouthpieces available, or is there a spacer or adapter available?

Thanks!
