rbdeli has a spectacular aura about
Local Pawn Shop has Olds Recording Trumpet..

Went to a Denver pawn shop the other day and asked if he had any trumpets, He said, no, but one of the other chain stores in Denver does. Olds Recording and they want $1200 for it. I called up the store owner guy and he said it's in great condition aside from missing some finish and it plays just fine.

Just curious if anyone has tried to negotiate with a pawn shop before. Are they very flexible? I assume if he's had this thing at his shop a while, he might be willing to go down quite a bit on his asking price. At $1200, it may be a good deal, right?

(Edit) Forgot to mention, it's serial number 282XXX.. I think it's around '49?

If anyone's interested, let me know and I'll give you the guys number.

SORRY: This should go under 'Vintage Horns' Can moderator move this post please?

Re: Local Pawn Shop has Olds Recording Trumpet..

I have bought alot of things from pawn shops and I've never payed the asking price. When they price thier inventory they add a little padding. If the owner knows what he has is valuable he won't give you a bigger discount because it has been sitting on his shelf for a while. He knows sooner or later it will sell. He will cut you a good deal on something of lesser value if he needs space for items he is going to put out. He will also work better with you if you are makeing a cash deal instead of a lay-away. Sometimes the amount he has invested in the item is coded in the stock number on the price tag. If you can brake his code it gives you an advantage. When you go to look at it don't act overly excited, and don't go straight to the trumpets. If it is in good condition I would offer him $800.00 and see how bad he wants to sell it. Good Luck!

My advice as well.

Re: Local Pawn Shop has Olds Recording Trumpet..

1200 seems a little high unless it is in really good condition. This trumpet is not a '49; it is a mid to late 50's model. I think you should be able to bargain to around 1000 or lower, and that should be a fair price.
