Martin Handcraft "The New Master"

Hello, all

I just picked up an old Martin Handcraft at an antique store.
It's a Martin Handcraft "The New Master". The serial number indicates a 1929 date of manufacture. It has a silver bell, with rather nice engraving. The body of the horn is brass. It doesn't however, have the loop in the leadpipe that the Dasants have.

I may try and post photos later, if possible.
Does anyone know anything about this model? Mine is in excellent shape, only a few dings in the crook. It's a real tight leadpipe-bell wrap, and has long, narrow braces.

It came with the original, terribly musty case, and the original Martin "Elkhart Indiana No. 8" mouthpiece.

Hopefully somebody out there will know what I bought!!
Thanks
~

Was "The New Master" engraved on the horn? I don't see any mention of such a model on Horn-u-copia. Silver bell feature is interesting.

Re: Martin Handcraft "The New Master"

The sax line had a Master (AKA Typewriter) model. It was their top of the line until the Troubadour replaced it, followed by the Handcraft Imperial and then the Handcraft Committee. My guess is it's one of their better models they offered. But to be honest, I have never heard of a NEW Master model before. Sounds like an interesting horn, especially with that silver bell. Makes you wonder if it was a custom horn for somebody. Lucky you for finding it !

Have you played it yet ?

Re: Martin Handcraft "The New Master"

Hey,
When I googled it, I found one mention somewhere here on TM from someone who had one. Therefore, I don't think it's custom.
It's also got a leadpipe that's brass until just after the cluster, than changes to rose brass. The valves were really quite sticky when I found it, so I was only able to play octaves and all that stuff. It's currently in the vat getting cleaned. The leadpipe was absolutely filthy. The bell flare is very gradual, somewhat similar to a Committee, I think. A small bell, too.
The engraving does say

Martin
H a n d c r a f t
The New Master
Elkhart
Ind

The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd valve slides are stuck, but should be loosened up.
I'll try to post some pics when I get around to it. It might be going to my tech tommmorow, as I'm picking up some horns and might get it de-dented while I'm there.

Thanks for the input
