![]() | Mouthpiece for my Conn Director Cornet aficionados: Does any know what mouthpiece 'standard' this era Conn (S/N 290623) takes? I have tried 3 that came with it and a couple others I had and so far I am favoring a Bach NY 7C I had laying around. The Bach MP still feels smallish compared to my Warburton 3M. Brand recommendations? Also, were these cornets built to a lower pitch? It seems I have to have both tuning slides almost all the way in to tune to the 440 standard. Any other info on the Conn Director cornets is appreciated. Thanks, Greg |

| Mezzo Forte User | Re: Mouthpiece for my Conn Director I see yours was made 1933-34 by the Connloyalist website. That site has alot of valuable info for you on this case.I have been researching my Gretsch Patfinder long cornet, as it would not tune with a standard trumpet mouthpiece. I learned the leadpipe was configured for a short shank cornet mouthpiece. I now use a jet tone Al HIrt cornet on it, with wrapping of electrical tape , and it plays and tunes fine now. There was a Conn 2 short shank just on ebay that sold about for about $12.00. The regular Conns have writing around the top part and a ridge at the middle of the shaft. The shortshank ones have no ridge and writing down the side of the shank. This may be the problem with your tuning. I believe that they changed to long shank in the 50's. All this info, photos, etc are on the Connloyalist web site. You didn't mention what model you have. Hope this helps. I don't know what MP was standard, but it looks like a Conn 4 is the most likely, like Bach 7c. |

![]() ![]() | Re: Mouthpiece for my Conn Director I have a 1955 Conn Director with Cuprion Bell. It uses a short cornet mouthpiece. I used a 5C with it. In Grade school I had a brand new Conn Director and it came with a 7C. That would be about 1966. I wish I still had that Conn Director. We sold it for $200.00.

I owned a Conn Director cornet (new) when I was in high school, too. It came with a wood case covered with vinyl or something and had a 7C mouthpiece. It may have been a short shank, but I can't remember. I traded it for a new Reynolds Contempora cornet which I gave away to a student in 1979. Both the Conn Director and the Reynolds Cotempora were good horns. Right now, I have a long cornet (Conn Constellation - 38A) in mint condition which I play from time to time. I usually play a Blessing Artistic 141 Short cornet now which I really like. lmf | |
