Which MP for Conn Vocabell 40B?

I just won a 1935 Conn Vocabell 40B on eBay. When it comes, what mouthpieces help bring it alive? Is it very mp sensitive?

Jim,

You are new here, so you probably haven't heard this question answered, but there is NO WAY that anyone here, over the internet can tell you what kind of mouthpiece to play with your new horn.

Of the answers that will come, some will say a big deep cup mouthpiece,

Others will offer up the small and shallow mouthpiece,

and some will say a middle of the road mouthpiece.

Take your pick.

I would start with whatever you are using now.

Re: Which MP for Conn Vocabell 40B?

While no one can say, I find that vintage horns often are mp sensitive, particularly in terms of physical fit in the horn. I only have a dozen trumpet 'pieces and might well benefit from others experiences with this unique horn if I have to go on a safari.

Re: Which MP for Conn Vocabell 40B?

Hey, Jim --

I have the 40A (Cornet-version of your horn ... looks identical, save for receiver).

Certainly, you have a drawer-full of mouthpieces ( LOL !), like the rest of us (?).

As with almost any horn I've had, I've tried various and asundry mouthpieces ... but, usually go back to what I prefer, anyhow.

Only "possible" suggestion: a vintage Conn (vertical letters). Sometimes, vintage horns seems to work best with vintage mouthpieces.

Re: Which MP for Conn Vocabell 40B?

Jim,

While my main player -- a Vocabell -- is modified enough to likely not be a valid data point, I have honked a reasonable amount in a past on a stock 48B Vocabell and thought my Reeves mouthpiece worked just fine.

Of course, I also think most of my cornet mouthpieces, long or short, deep or shallow, work just fine in my 80A cornet, an instrument that some players consider to be mouthpiece sensitive.

Maybe it isn't instruments so much as players that are mouthpiece sensitive...
