    My 'best' cornet

As all here know, I have a foolishly large 'accumilation' of trumpets and cornets. After playing an outdoor concert at a monster annual farmland chicken fry yesterday with one of the community concert bands that I am in, I was complimented on the beauty of the tone and intonation of my recently acquired York Custom Model cornet. Today, I dug out all of my 'top shelf' cornets for evaluation. Listing them in the order of MY preference, it came out to Conn 36A, Conn 12A, York Airflow, York Custom Model, King Master Model, York Professional, Reynolds Contempora, Boston 3 Star, and, amazingly, a late model Olds Ambassador that came in ahead of an early L.A. made Olds Special. This is the top ten. I have many more that I am very happy with, but, these made my 'TOP SHELF' category.

This is not to argue but just to add my 'Top 10' list to yours (these are just cornets - I am still sorting out my trumpet preferences).
You can see that mine are not really vintage - just older popular models. So far I have stuck to ones that I can play rather than simply collect to admire. I am still reading threads here to find out more about some more esoteric ones to try ('N+1' still alive and well, thanks).

Hi Lou, Sunday confessionals will no doubt cleanse your accumulation guilt.
That must be the one in Drenthe you told me about. Must have been kind of warm. What happened to that York Master feathertouch in the lineup? If you have soured on that, I would be glad to take it off your hands.

The York Feathertouch Master cornet ended up #12 in my personal evaluation. It is going to stay in my 'accumilation'. Yes, that was the Drenthe, Mi. chicken fry. They sold over 1,400 meals there. It was a real fine experience.

    Hi Lou,

Where does the Couturier mentioned on your signature fit in the pecking order? Curious if the ranked cornets are all better, or if the Couturier wasn't listed because it's labeled as a 'trumpet'?

I have both a Couturier long cornet,( looks like a trumpet ). and a York Wizard, ( Couturier patent and design ), short cornet. They are both very good horns, but, the intonation is just a wee bit dodgy on both of them. This might be caused by non OEM mouthpieces, but I am not sure.

    Re: My 'best' cornet

I am surprised that no one has wondered which of my cornets ended up # 11. It is a Yamaha student model 2310. Anyone looking for a super fine and currently inexpensive cornet should give one of these a try.

    Re: My 'best' cornet

My top picks keep getting smaller and smaller, from dozens that I used to play down to a 38-A, 80-A, and 36-A Special. The only non Conn that gets drug out anymore is a H.N.White Standard from the 1940's.

My Conn CG 36A (1948) is for me the best playing horn up to now. But my 1942 silver 80A is also great, a little more difficult, but such a strange animal, what a fun to play, what a bottom power.

You know in the guitar world they have a name for this. G.A.S.
Guitar Acquisition Syndrome , we need a name for the trumpet/cornet/flugalhorn world. B.A.S? Brass Acquisition Syndrome
