| Need help with dates! I recently purchased a set of four Lyon & Healy herald trumpets that appear to be from about 1900. The bells are all engraved with a floral pattern and the company logo, along with the words: Al Kader -Temple-Shrine-Band Portland Oregon Each bell is a little bit different, which leads me to believe that they are hand engraved. The serial numbers are 8667, 8668, 8669, and 8671. The case seems to be plywood(?) covered with cloth or paper, and is about the size of a tenor sax case. Any help would be greatly appreciated. All the best, Andrew. |

| Re: Need help with dates! Have you tried the horn-u-copia folks? Possibly the best resource on web for sleuthing details on funky old horns. I see they have a whole thread devoted to Lyon and Healy (just scroll down 'til you get to the L's). I'd post a question there if you can't find what you're looking for with what's already posted on that site. Horn-u-copia - Index Good luck! |

| Piano User | Re: Need help with dates! Hi Andrew, those sound interesting. In checking Horn-u-copia's Lyon and Healy section, sub-Heraldic, Some one from New Zealand sent in info on a heralds trumpet he has marked Gabrielle -Lyon & Healy, Chicago. A 2 piece, no valve silver trumpet about 103mm in length incl MP and posted a photo of the bell and requested any info. So far, don't see any responses. This was posted Dec 06. I think L & H imported most of their instruments. There have been other threads here and on TH on this outfit. Name sounds French. Maybe country of orgin on them somewhere? In the L&H History threads, Peter, YaBB Moderator entered a post in Oct , 07 indicating he had bought a 1915 L & H catalog of brass instruments, etc. excerpt " The catalog offers a few curious instruments including the slide cornet of soprano Trombone, the mellophone, the Huttl multiplex (French Horn) and an Herald trumpet. The trumpet is the only trumpet offered in this calalog. You might want to go thru this stuff on Horn-u-copia and maybe post a thread on your horns and contact Peter for more detail . There was a note he planned to scan the catalog and offer for sale. Somebody on ebay is trying to sell the 1880 L & H calalog for $450. Looks like you can get it free on Horn-u-copia catalog section. |
