Re: new cornet player wants a cornet

regards bore size. It depends on the design of the horn. But in general you will be good with a medium large bore instrument. Bore size is measure at the ports in the valves. A medium large bore is usually .459 to .460 thousands of an inch.If you haven't played in many years stay with the mpc I listed in my last post. After you have gotten your "chops" back. you can try some deeper mpcs. Good luck!!

Re: new cornet player wants a cornet

Again gents, many thanks. I have recently bid on and won a Conn Director from the early 1970's. Serial number P62152. It looked to be in VGC and had a York3C mpc. I will look out for a 7c as suggested. When I get back to playing in some sort of respectable style I will look for an upgrade cornet but until then hopefully the Director will suit fine.

Many thanks, Mark

Re: new cornet player wants a cornet

The shephard's crook allows the instrument to be somewhat shorter..the bell is closer to the ear of the player...that couple of inches makes a real difference. A real cornet sound is somewhat mellower than that of a trumpet and a cornet is easier to "fill," ad has less resistance than a trumpet.Rule of thumb...a trumpet is 2/3 cylindrical (bore-wise) and 1/3 conical.the cornet is just the reverse...2/3 cnical and 1/3 cylindrical. Because more of the bore t apers open, it hasa less resistance.

from another thread (I hope that's ok)...

I have a brand new Jupiter JCR-520ML Cornet, lacquer. It plays great! $795 listed on the website, $695 for TM members. I also have a ton of vintage cornets. Just shoot me an email.
