New York Bach Strad

I found a Bach Strad NY Medium bore, laquer finsh in fair to good condition. Serial no. is in the 8000's Not sure if the owner wants to sell it but I'm doing my homework in case he does.

Any idea what it may be worth? I'll appreciate any input.

My private lessons teacher plays mainly on an old Mt. Vernon New York Strad, I'm not sure if the serial numbers are close or not, but she just recently had hers apraised for $4,500, its in really nice condition. I have a lesson tomarow, so I'll check the serial number and get back to you.

You didn't mention anything about the Mr. Vernon though, you just said "new york", so is it a Mr. Vernon?
(sorry if my question seems ignorant, but I was never sure if a 'new york' bach strad was something differant than a 'mt. vernon' bach strad...)

BigBadWolf is an unknown quantity at this point
New Yorks were before Mt Vernon. Depending on the condition, NY and Mt Vernons should fetch $2000+. $4500 is very high and not likely, it was probably insured for that much, the actual value is likely 3/4 of that.

camelbrass will become famous soon enough
Generally medium bore NY Strads go for $1700-$2200 (or the ones I've seen) depending on condition and whether they're silver/lacquer/raw brass. ML bores are much more in demand and probably go for $2,500-$3,000+.

As has been correctly pointed out when people talk NY Strads they are generally talking about the trumpets made from the start of production in the early 1920s and extending through to the move to Mount Vernon in the 1950s. Some of the very, very early ones from the 20s and 30s have a different bell stamp without the postal address but that's too much detail for my passing knowledge. The later (from the early '40s) Bronx factory NY trumpets typically have the postal address '67' on the bell.

The 'other' NY Strad is the Mount Vernon made when VB moved factories in the early '50s (?) and generally always referred to as a Mount Vernon to distinguish them from those made in the other New York factories. It seems to me that Mt Vernons fetch a little less than NYs but I stand to be corrected. A reasonable silver Mount Vernon ML might fetch $2,500 whereas the NY equivalent could be quite a bit more than that. A medium bore Mt Vernon probably won't go over $1700-$1800. $4,500 for a Mt Vernon sounds like an insurance appraisal value...

Have a look at Dillons they have a few Mt Vernons and two very tasty NYs, one that has had a 'famous' owner and the other 'like new' so they are premium instruments. Bear in mind these prices represent the top end of the band plus a little bit more, particularly given Dillon's reputation for selling good quality instruments.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Sorry, but no one who is sane will pay that much for a Bach, no matter what vintage.

Look around ebay for going rates, even the suggested prices I saw on this topic were high. I'd say $1100-1500 is more likely. I had a ML Mt. Vernon 25xxx for sale for months for $1600 and no one was interested at all, I decided to keep it. M bores will go for less than that as they are not a popular bore size, although they play well anyway.

Sorry guys, my mistake... it was an insurance thing. I guess it's more of a personal thing to her rather than an actual value thing.

Thanks for all your info. It sounds like $1000-$1500 is fairly accurate. I'm hoping to pick it up for MUCH less.

Thanks again!

Hi, Ken (Trumpet1Ohio) --

I think you have received good advice here ... "Tank you, boyce!" (Lawrence Welk).

Seriously -- any New York Strad (pre-Mount Vernon) is worthy of consideration. Few are "pristine" or "virgin" (un-restored); but, it is of historical interest (and therefore, valuable to collectors), in-that it was probably assembled in-part, or entirely, by Vincent Bach, himself.

A few years ago, I found (a legitimate "Pawn Shop Prize") a New York Strad Cornet (Model 181), serial number 4XXX, for $500. Although I prefer the tonal-qualities of "classic" Shepherd's Crook Cornets ... (this Model 181 is a "long-wrap") ... it's build-quality and sound are superb.
Acquiring this horn was a "no-brainer".

So -- you have to ask yourself the question: "Do you need a horn like this?"

... Probably ... but, at the right price.

Hi Robert,

Just replied to you on the Martin Imperial! The guy that owns this horn won't sell it. Too much senimental value. I'd buy this one if he'd let it go...

Hello,

Not to upset the apple cart here, but I've been offered $5000 by three different sources over the past few years for a New York Bach medium bore Bb trumpet (ca. 1942) in my collection. It's simply a fabulous horn.

I'm hanging onto it for sentimental reasons -- the trumpet was restored by Ren Schilke (my first teacher) in 1971 and my father was working in his shop at the time.
