Re: Newbie with Oldie horn :-)

WooooWWW! Dang, those look really spiffy, just booful! I can tell you spend some lovin hours on those horns, ah tell ya whut. You should be proud!

Insofar as the second picture, is it a trick of the light, or perhaps my old eyes, but is that PINK RUST?? I thought brass oxidation was green, and patina was, well, brass colored...

Pj

Thanks. It does take a while but I really enjoy doing it.

It is not the light or your eyes. That is exactly how it looked. I think that the color is somehow related to some environmental effect (something in the air, or whatever - it came that way and the previous owner did not know what caused it). There was a hot debate here awhile back regarding whether that was "red rot" or not. Technically it is, but since many trumpet players associate the term "red rot" with a specific condition where de-zincification occurs inside the leadpipe or other areas and then bleeds through to show up as pink circles with black dots in the center, then I try to avoid using that term here. Anyway, it did come off with Brasso and Tarn-X. BTW, I posted a more detailed discussion of the use of Tarn-X in this thread:
http://www.trumpetmaster.com/vb/f131...ion-48947.html (I own an unlacquered trumpet - metal coloration questions)
Tarn-X can be very helpful if used very carefully - it is so reactive that it is not recommended for use with brass per the instructions on the bottle...
