Beautiful! Yea, I've read your posts about the Mendez - and they have sparked my interest. The long cornet is cool looking!

I'll keep an eye out for one...I guess I don't have to stop there!

No, you don't HAVE to stop there - you CAN'T stop there. Face it, you're in this boat with the rest of us. Start clearing a space in the garage or else look for a LOT of hiding places (my wife still hasn't found all of mine but she's looking!).

Re: Ok, so my Olds Super Cornet came today...

Thanks guys...doubt I'll catch up to you, but it is fun.

Quick receiver qustion, the Super I have seems to have a larger receiver than the Ambassador - I use a Yamaha 14B4 cornet mouthpiece (same as my trumpet), which fits but it goes in further than the Ambassador (about 1/2 in further). Is it ok to use this cornet mouthpiece, or should I be looking for a different one?

Also, I've been wanting to try a vee cup mouthpiece, any recommendation for one with a similar rim diameter to the Yamaha (or Schilke) 14B4?

Thanks!

Re: Ok, so my Olds Super Cornet came today...

Up until the late '50s (from my understanding, which is limited) the Olds used a larger, non-standard receiver, which is why a vintage mp specifically for Olds will work better than most modern mp's. I was able to get a NOS Olds 3 and Bach 2 that fit perfectly. Keep your eyes open, and research on the Olds sites for recommendations on modern mp's that may fit.

Re: Ok, so my Olds Super Cornet came today...

Hi,
The earlier Olds cornet receiver accepted only a large shank Olds mouthpiece. Mark Curry makes them. I have an LA Ambassador with a Curry 3DC and the larger "O" shank. I wonder how it would sound if I had tried a 3VC which is v shaped and deeper. I think a 14B4 match would possibly be a 5VC. You can also try a #14 Schilke cornet m/p. My friend used to borrow mine and used a #15 with no intonation problems or wobble.

Cheers,

Brian

Checked out the Curry site, the larger Olds shank appears to be a custom mouthpiece starting at $150. Just dropped the bones on the horn, can't do that right now.

But, I took out my flugel mouthpiece Yamaha 14F4, fits better than the standard cornet mouthpiece. Since it is a V cup in mellows out the tone - actually sounds real good! Has anyone tried doing this? Should I still be looking for a larger shank cornet mouthpiece?

Please pardon my ignorance, I've done my best to search the site - if anyone can give me a link to an appropriate thread on this subject it would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Jon,

You could always get a tech to repalce your oversize receiver with a later model 'standard' one. That would be much less than a custom mouthpiece and allow you to try different types. Using a flugelhorn mouthpiece does work although the intonation might be a bit dodgy.

Cheers,

Brian

There is some discussion here
Olds Central: Information on trumpets and cornets by F. E Olds and Son 1928-1979

regarding this situation....
